Bat Chat & Habitat: Explore the amazing world of bats

September 20 @ 5:00 pm 8:00 pm

Discover bats & build a roost box!

Come join us (Wild Intrigue and Nick James Design) at The Hut on the Green for a fun and family-friendly evening all about our fascinating nocturnal neighbours—bats! These amazing creatures come to life after sunset, silently swooping through the night to play their crucial role in our ecosystem. Did you know that tiny Pipistrelle bats can munch through around 3,000 insects in just one night? Or that the bigger Noctule bats love to hang out in big old trees?

At our Bat Chat & Habitat event, you’ll get to discover the wonderful world of bats with a lively, illustrated talk by Wild Intrigue. You’ll learn all about British bat ecology, their intriguing history, and what we can do to help protect them. Then, get hands-on with Nick James as you and your family do some wood work and work together to make your very own bat roost box!

Here’s the best part: we’ll be using wood from one of the trees that recently fell in Gosforth Central Park, right near the café. So, you’ll be creating something for the park, in the park, with wood from the park. How cool is that!?

Afterward, we’ll head out on a Bat Safari to listen in on these mysterious creatures with acoustic detectors. It’s a fantastic way to experience the magic of bats right in your own community.

This event is perfect for families! Adults and children will work together to create one bat box per ticket purchased. Please note, all children must bring an adult with them and be supervised by an adult at all times during the event. Suitable for children age 7 and up. Grown up children [18+] are welcome to attend on their own too!

One ticket admits up to 3 people to build one bat box together.

Event Schedule | 5pm – 8pm

  • Illustrated Bat Chat by Wild Intrigue
  • Bat Roost Box Workshop with Nick James – Build a bat box as a family using local wood from Gosforth Central Park.

  • Sunset Bat Safari – Grab an acoustic detector and join us as we tune in to the sounds of bats in the park.

You’ll leave with a bat box that you can either take home with you or have it installed in the park to help our local bat friends find a cosy new roost!
