Pond Rave

NEW for 2022, this Mini Exped explores the vibrant life hidden below the surface of Gosforth Park Nature Reserve’s ponds…

This is an underwater safari with a difference, so leave those wetsuits at home!

By mixing up special hydrophone technology with a touch of silent disco tech magic, we’ll be diving into the unexpected acoustics of wetland life. With the rhythmic pops, clicks and buzzes of underwater animal acoustics brought straight to your ears in real time, you can enjoy front row seats to the brilliant and bizarre sounds of underwater creatures – a pond rave, if you like.

We’ll also be enjoying some good old pond dipping, using nets and trays to gently capture and spy on the amazing array of wildlife beneath the surface before releasing them. From dragonfly larvae and water beetles prowling for prey, to specially camouflaged Caddisfly nymphs, you will discover the fascinating lives, adaptations – and dramas – of our little-known freshwater invertebrates.

Most suitable for ages 12 and above, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

A short (15 minute) walk will take place through the beautiful Gosforth Park Nature Reserve woodland to reach the pond.

Why not take a look at our other Mini Expeds taking place at Gosforth Park Nature Reserve to make a day of it?
