SUMMARY:Nocturnal Ouseburn | Women's New Moon Wander
DESCRIPTION:An after-dark exploration of Ouseburn Woods under a starlit canopy.\n\n\n\nDuring the February New Moon\, when the night-sky is at its darkest\, a celestial canopy of starlight shines its brightest. \n\n\n\nThanks to the rich darkness of the nearby Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, we can enjoy an essence of its beauty from areas in the city tucked away from the trespass of artificial light. \n\n\n\nTraditionally considered a time of renewal and growth – of longer days as we slowly emerge from the Winter – the February New Moon offers a great opportunity for grounding and inspiration. Perhaps we’ll ignore it’s connection to spring cleaning for now though… \n\n\n\nJoin Heather from Wild Ouseburn for a guided\, women’s walk through Ouseburn Woods and City Stadium\, in search of tranquil darkness\, to gaze upon the stars. For the past 7 years\, Heather has wandered through Ouseburn Woods at night to survey bats\, and will share intriguing insights into the wildlife which benefits from these wild\, dark spaces. \n\n\n\nThis free event is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in connection with the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival. \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET \n\nHeather will be waiting outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm for a 7pm start\, from there\, you’ll slowly head into Ouseburn Woods and up to City Stadium – perfect spots for stargazing. Binoculars will be available for use on the night\, which offer a great way to look deeper into the starscape. Fingers crossed for clear skies! \n\n\n\nBOOKING \n\nThis walk welcomes all who identify as women <3 \n\n\n\nThis walk is most suited for adult women (and ages 12+ with adult supervision)\, however if you have childcare requirements you are very welcome to bring your little stargazers along too! \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP for your free ticket(s)\, and keep a look out for emails and updates to this event listing\, as we may need to cancel or postpone in the event of wet weather. \n\n\n\nIf you are no longer able to attend\, please let us know so we can re-open your space. You’re welcome to get in touch with Heather to find out more at info@wildintrigue.co.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting point: This event will begin and end outside Ouseburn Farm at 7pm. \n\n\n\nPart of the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Wild Finca
DESCRIPTION:As a Christmas treat\, we’re so excited to invite you for an evening immersed in the inspirational landscape of Wild Finca. Tuning in all the way from Northern Spain\, Luke and Katie will join us to host a virtual talk\, with the chance for a discussion and Q&A at the end. Although the talk is virtual\, we will gather together in the Ouseburn Farm event space to enjoy a festive night full of wild inspiration\, mince pies and drinks. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. This year’s talk series is supported by the the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way fund. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK + SPEAKER\n\n\n\nWhen wildlife photographer Luke Massey and his partner\, writer Katie Stacey\, first discovered a derelict dairy farm in the mountains of northern Spain\, they had no idea it would become the centre of a long-term rewilding project – and the place where they would build a home and raise their two sons. \n\n\n\nNow seven years into the Wild Finca journey\, Luke shares how they have transformed an abandoned\, overgrazed landscape into a thriving mosaic of meadows\, woodlands and wetlands. He recounts encounters with wolves\, bears and countless other species\, alongside the daily\, grounded work of restoring soil\, water and habitat while raising a young family in the heart of a rewilding landscape. \n\n\n\nFrom boosting biodiversity and creating new habitats\, to turning a once-exhausted farm into an oasis for wildlife and documenting rare species through camera traps\, Luke offers an honest\, hopeful look at what becomes possible when you choose to live with – rather than against – the wild. \n\n\n\nFor those who’d like to dive deeper into the story behind Wild Finca – the land\, the wildlife\, and the family shaping their lives around it – Katie’s book No Paradise With Wolves is now available wherever you get your books. Recently named one of BBC Wildlife’s Best Books of 2025\, it makes the perfect stocking filler for any nature lover. \n\n\n\nThis virtual talk and discussion will be hosted (only) in the Ouseburn Farm event space\, join us for an inspiring pre-Christmas evening! \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\n\n\nTICKETS: \n\n\n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Wild Roots Community Garden with Nick Figgis
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome Nick Figgis\, Project Manager of the Wild Roots Community Garden situated in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nFor decades our general approach to gardening has been carried out as a war on nature – manicured lawns and aphid-free roses\, offering little in terms of food or habitat for wildlife\, and requiring a never-ending stream of chemicals to maintain. \n\nBut a quiet revolution is taking place at the vanguard of this ancient human activity. \n\nBut who in the urban environment has the access to garden\, and can it be made more available as an activity? Should we think of brownfield sites as wasteland reserved only for the next shopping centre to be built\, or as the “rainforests” of Britain\, full of biodiversity and rugged beauty which we can enhance? How can allowing aphids to thrive be better for your crops in the long term? \n\nWhat do we have in common with wild animals like beavers\, and why do we need to be more like them? \n\nIn this talk\, along with an overview of progress in the Wild Roots Community Garden\, Nick will explore these questions along with some new and rediscovered approaches to gardening with wildlife (and people) in mind.  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\n\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 23rd January 2025. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink and grab a mince pie! We’ll finish at around 7.30pm. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. Talks take place in Ouseburn Farm’s lovely\, warm event space. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, including access to the event space and toilets\, are wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | An Evening with Sophie Yeo\, author of Nature's Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTICE: Unfortunately Sophie is unwell so this event is now cancelled. Please do come along to Ouseburn Farm for 6.30pm and we will instead dive into the fascinating world of Beavers: their ecology\, reintroduction and future\, hosted by Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue). \n\n\n\nWe’re very excited to welcome North East author\, Sophie Yeo\, for an evening discussion on her 2024 book\, Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back. \n\n\n\nPlenty of festive treats and nibbles will be available too! \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nSophie Yeo is a writer and journalist based in Durham. She is the author of Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back\, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Wainwright Prize for writing on conservation. \n\n\n\nSophie is also the founder and editor of Inkcap Journal\, a publication about conservation in Britain\, which won the Press Gazette Newsletter of the Year award in 2022. She has written about nature and climate change for publications including The Washington Post\, The Guardian and BBC Future.  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\nFor thousands of years\, humans have been the architects of the natural world. Our activities have permanently altered the environment – for good and for bad. \n\n\n\nIn Nature’s Ghosts\, award-winning journalist Sophie Yeo examines how the planet would have looked before humans scrubbed away its diversity: from landscapes carved out by megafauna to the primeval forests that emerged following the last Ice Age\, and from the eagle-haunted skies of the Dark Ages to the flower-decked farms of more recent centuries. \n\n\n\nUncovering the stories of the people who have helped to shape the landscape\, she seeks out their footprints even where it seems there are none to be found. And she explores the timeworn knowledge that can help to fix our broken relationship with the earth. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Sophie encounters the environmental detectives – archaeological\, cultural and ecological – reconstructing\, in stunning detail\, the landscapes we have lost. \n\n\n\nToday\, the natural world is more vulnerable than ever; the footprints of humanity heavier than they have ever been. But\, as this urgent book argues\, from the ghosts of the past\, we may learn how to build a more wild and ancient future. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nSTRUCTURE: \n\nSophie will join Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue) to discuss her journey as an environmental writer\, exploring topics such as researching her book\, her perspective on landscape-scale nature restoration and other intriguing pathways to be explored during the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe event will include an opportunity for the audience to engage in the discussion\, and will feature a Q&A session. \n\n\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. Donations will support the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 12th December. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink and grab a mince pie! We’ll finish at around 8pm. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | The Urban Flora of Newcastle with James Common
DESCRIPTION:Join brilliant botanist\, James Common\, for an exploration of Newcastle’s wonderful weeds\, elusive orchids and all in between. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\n\n\nJames Common is Senior Naturalist for the Naturalist History Society of Northumbrian (NHSN) and Vice-County Recorder of the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI). He is\, in his own words\, “slightly obsessed with the North East’s wild plants” so there is no better place to enjoy a botanical-bounty in November! \n\n\n\nNewcastle-upon-Tyne and neighbouring parts of urban Tyneside are home to over 1\,000 species of wild and naturalised plants. Amazingly\, this is roughly one quarter of all the plant species known in the UK. Here\, species associated with woodland\, meadows\, wetlands and other natural habitats mingle with those found exclusively in our urban spaces creating a flora that is both locally unique yet broadly similar to towns and cities nationwide. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we’ll explore highlights of Newcastle’s urban flora\, taking a look at key urban habitats and the plants found there and take a closer look at some current trends in plant abundance across the city. We’ll also enjoy a whistle-stop tour of plant life in the Ouse Burn Valley – one of the most diverse sites in the city. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Protecting and Restoring Nature: a local government ecologist’s perspective
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Peter Shield\, Senior Ecologist with Gateshead Council\, to hear his perspective of opportunities for nature restoration in the urban landscape. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nThe River Tyne physically divides the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead\, but in ecological terms\, it serves as a vital connection for urban wildlife navigating between the two.  \n\n\n\nOuseburn’s tidal waters and expansive green corridor intertwine the landscapes and ecosystems of these neighbouring cities. Kestrels\, for instance\, maintain territories across the urban divide\, hunting freely between grasslands. Butterflies flit between patches of nectar-rich wildflowers\, while otters swim between river catchments and pollen drifts between the cities. \n\n\n\nThough a “landscape-scale approach” to nature conservation is more commonly discussed in rural contexts\, this holistic perspective must also guide efforts to protect and restore our urban environments. \n\n\n\nTo kick off the third Wild Ouseburn Talks series\, we are delighted to welcome Peter Shield from Gateshead Council’s Natural Environment Team. From developing policies and plans\, managing projects and partnerships\, local government ecologists play a crucial role in shaping and delivering initiatives that safeguard and revive nature in our cities. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an illustrated talk by Peter\, who will share his perspective on protecting and restoring urban nature. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session\, providing an opportunity to engage in constructive discussions about nature conservation. Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. SUMMARY:Moth Morning
DESCRIPTION:The UK is home to over 2\,500 species of moths\, yet there are only a handful of records from the Wild Ouseburn area. Like much of our wildlife\, moths in the UK are declining\, with an overall decrease of 28% since 1968. These nocturnal pollinators play a crucial role in our ecosystem and are a vital food source for bats\, mammals\, and birds. Their caterpillars are especially important\, serving as the main food source for chicks of Blue Tits\, Great Tits\, Robins\, Wrens\, and Blackbirds. \n\n\n\nMoth trapping is essential for conservation as it helps us understand and manage the habitats of the Ouseburn Valley. Moths are indicators of changes in climate and habitat health. By using light traps to catch and record the species present\, we can gather valuable data. Once recorded\, all moths are safely released back into the wild. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of moth recording or a moth morning to check the traps. You will help contribute to the conservation of these important nocturnal pollinators and help us protect the biodiversity of the Ouseburn Valley. \n\n\n\nNo need to book\, just meet outside Ouseburn Farm for 8am.

SUMMARY:Botany Survey
DESCRIPTION:Colourful flashes of urban wildflowers creep out from wall crevices\, between cracks in pavements and in the beautiful tangles of our green spaces. \n\n\n\nEverything from the purple clouds of Ivy-leaved Toadflax pushing through walls\, to Elderflowers pulsing their perfume along paths\, to much-misunderstood Dandelions (of which there are many species) bursting through concrete to feed our pollinators. \n\n\n\nWild Ouseburn is the 4th most botanically diverse area in Newcastle\, but there’s still more to discover. Join us to identify\, map and document the flora of the Lower Ouseburn Valley. Plants are the cornerstone of any ecosystem and contribute greatly to the diversity of species. Gaining a better understanding of species present\, and their abundance is key to protecting and rewilding the area for the future. \n\n\n\nHeaton’s own Urban Botanist extraordinaire\, James Common\, Senior Naturalist at the Natural History Society of Northumbria will lead us in a number of botanical surveys across the season\, recording every species we find. \n\n\n\nNo need to book\, just meet outside of Ouseburn Farm. No experience or understanding of plants is required! \n\n\n\nFind out more about the Wild Ouseburn project here.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to help survey the birds of Wild Ouseburn with the Merlin Bird ID App!\n\n\n\nThe Wild Ouseburn project aims to survey as much of the wildlife in the area as possible\, documenting wildlife records that can help conserve and restore the species in the valley\, by informing future management and identifying opportunities for rewilding. \n\n\n\nBy surveying the birds with set methods we can compare records year after year\, creating robust data to monitor the Lower Ouseburn Valley’s birds into the future. \n\n\n\nThe Wild Ouseburn Bird Count will use a survey technique called ‘Point Counts’\, a pre-defined spot where you record the birds over 10 minutes. For this survey we’ll be using the Merlin Bird ID App\, which can recognise and identify the birds you hear! \n\n\n\nThis training workshop will cover all the survey techniques for the Wild Ouseburn Bird Count\, including setting up the Merlin Bird ID App. \n\n\n\nNo prior experience needed\, just a phone capable of downloading the Merlin Bird ID App (we’re currently looking at the possibility of having some tablets for survey use). \n\n\n\nNo booking required\, just meet outside Ouseburn Farm for 10am.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Water Quality in the Ouseburn - Challenges and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Dr David Werner to discuss his work in exploring the health of our blue corridor\, the Ouseburn. Part of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust.  \n\n\n\nThis event if free and open for all to attend as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. Book your free ticket in the link opposite. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK \n\n\n\nThe Reece Foundation commissioned Newcastle University to undertake an analysis of water quality in the Ouseburn as it was concerned that pollution was having a detrimental effect on the Ouseburn valley as a healthy green space for people and wildlife.  \n\n\n\nOur investigation confirmed that water quality in Jesmond Dene and the Ouseburn Valley is inadequate for a well-used urban green space. Innovative methods using environmental DNA showed that water quality is changeable and depending on the weather conditions. During one September storm event 72-77% of all bacteria in the Ouseburn originate from the sewer system. A partnership comprising the Reece Foundation\, Newcastle University\, Northumbrian Water\, Newcastle City Council\, Urban Green\, the Environment Agency and other key stakeholders has now been established to restore the Ouseburn back to a healthy state. All stakeholders are welcome to join this endeavour. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n\n\n\nDr David Werner is Professor of Environmental Systems Modelling at Newcastle University. His research group is developing innovative methods to rapidly survey\, map\, and communicate waterborne hazards. This includes the development of an innovative suitcase laboratory for molecular microbiology\, and the use of environmental DNA for faecal pollution source attribution and quantitative microbial risk assessment. He works with academic\, charity\, and industry partners in the UK\, Tanzania\, Ethiopia\, Brazil\, India\, Nepal\, and Thailand. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: The Ouseburn Trust

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks: An evening with Neil & Leigh from Hill Top Farm
DESCRIPTION:Neil Heseltine and Leigh Weston run Hill Top Farm in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales\, where they continue the long Heseltine tradition of farming in Malham\, whilst transforming their land into a place for nature to thrive.
