SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | The Urban Flora of Newcastle with James Common
DESCRIPTION:Join brilliant botanist\, James Common\, for an exploration of Newcastle’s wonderful weeds\, elusive orchids and all in between. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\n\n\nJames Common is Senior Naturalist for the Naturalist History Society of Northumbrian (NHSN) and Vice-County Recorder of the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI). He is\, in his own words\, “slightly obsessed with the North East’s wild plants” so there is no better place to enjoy a botanical-bounty in November! \n\n\n\nNewcastle-upon-Tyne and neighbouring parts of urban Tyneside are home to over 1\,000 species of wild and naturalised plants. Amazingly\, this is roughly one quarter of all the plant species known in the UK. Here\, species associated with woodland\, meadows\, wetlands and other natural habitats mingle with those found exclusively in our urban spaces creating a flora that is both locally unique yet broadly similar to towns and cities nationwide. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we’ll explore highlights of Newcastle’s urban flora\, taking a look at key urban habitats and the plants found there and take a closer look at some current trends in plant abundance across the city. We’ll also enjoy a whistle-stop tour of plant life in the Ouse Burn Valley – one of the most diverse sites in the city. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. Donations will support the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 21st November. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. Talks take place in Ouseburn Farm’s lovely\, warm event space. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, including access to the event space and toilets\, are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss other accessibility requirements\, please feel welcome to contact us and we’ll be very happy to help. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto: Urban wildflowers and plants thriving on proposed development site\, Malmo Quay | Wild Intrigue\, 2024

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Protecting and Restoring Nature: a local government ecologist’s perspective
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Peter Shield\, Senior Ecologist with Gateshead Council\, to hear his perspective of opportunities for nature restoration in the urban landscape. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nThe River Tyne physically divides the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead\, but in ecological terms\, it serves as a vital connection for urban wildlife navigating between the two.  \n\n\n\nOuseburn’s tidal waters and expansive green corridor intertwine the landscapes and ecosystems of these neighbouring cities. Kestrels\, for instance\, maintain territories across the urban divide\, hunting freely between grasslands. Butterflies flit between patches of nectar-rich wildflowers\, while otters swim between river catchments and pollen drifts between the cities. \n\n\n\nThough a “landscape-scale approach” to nature conservation is more commonly discussed in rural contexts\, this holistic perspective must also guide efforts to protect and restore our urban environments. \n\n\n\nTo kick off the third Wild Ouseburn Talks series\, we are delighted to welcome Peter Shield from Gateshead Council’s Natural Environment Team. From developing policies and plans\, managing projects and partnerships\, local government ecologists play a crucial role in shaping and delivering initiatives that safeguard and revive nature in our cities. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an illustrated talk by Peter\, who will share his perspective on protecting and restoring urban nature. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session\, providing an opportunity to engage in constructive discussions about nature conservation. SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Water Quality in the Ouseburn - Challenges and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Dr David Werner to discuss his work in exploring the health of our blue corridor\, the Ouseburn. Part of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust.  \n\n\n\nThis event if free and open for all to attend as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. Book your free ticket in the link opposite. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK \n\n\n\nThe Reece Foundation commissioned Newcastle University to undertake an analysis of water quality in the Ouseburn as it was concerned that pollution was having a detrimental effect on the Ouseburn valley as a healthy green space for people and wildlife.  \n\n\n\nOur investigation confirmed that water quality in Jesmond Dene and the Ouseburn Valley is inadequate for a well-used urban green space. Innovative methods using environmental DNA showed that water quality is changeable and depending on the weather conditions. During one September storm event 72-77% of all bacteria in the Ouseburn originate from the sewer system. A partnership comprising the Reece Foundation\, Newcastle University\, Northumbrian Water\, Newcastle City Council\, Urban Green\, the Environment Agency and other key stakeholders has now been established to restore the Ouseburn back to a healthy state. All stakeholders are welcome to join this endeavour. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n\n\n\nDr David Werner is Professor of Environmental Systems Modelling at Newcastle University. His research group is developing innovative methods to rapidly survey\, map\, and communicate waterborne hazards. This includes the development of an innovative suitcase laboratory for molecular microbiology\, and the use of environmental DNA for faecal pollution source attribution and quantitative microbial risk assessment. He works with academic\, charity\, and industry partners in the UK\, Tanzania\, Ethiopia\, Brazil\, India\, Nepal\, and Thailand. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: The Ouseburn Trust

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks: An evening with Neil & Leigh from Hill Top Farm
DESCRIPTION:Neil Heseltine and Leigh Weston run Hill Top Farm in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales\, where they continue the long Heseltine tradition of farming in Malham\, whilst transforming their land into a place for nature to thrive. Life in the rural idyll of the Dales is a far cry from Leigh’s urban upbringing in Wallsend\, but her Newcastle-roots have remained a strong part of her\, and her family’s\, identity. \n\n\n\nWith 1100-acres to care for\, Neil and Leigh have adapted their cattle and sheep farming in the past 20 years to enhance biodiversity\, develop species-rich hay meadows and restore natural processes. Neil also shares his valuable expertise in transformational farming through his appointment as Chair of the Yorkshire Dales National Park authority. \n\n \n\n\n\nYou may have recently watched Neil and Leigh’s inspiring\, nature-based approach to farming in the BBC documentary\, Saving Our Wild Isles\, narrated by David Attenborough. \n\n\n\n \n\nHosted at Ouseburn Farm as part of the Wild Talks winter series\, Wild Intrigue are delighted to host an illustrated discussion with Leigh and Neil about their farming journey\, their family’s encounters with nature at Hill Top Farm\, and to welcome their fresh perspective of wildness and urban nature management in Newcastle city. \n\n\n\n \n\nA Q&A will be hosted at the end of the discussion\, which we invite you to participate in. \n\n\n\n \n\nOpen and free to all\, light refreshments will be provided. Please book your free place in advance\, and arrive 10 minutes before the start time to get a cuppa and find a seat for a 6pm start. \n\nBOOK YOU FREE SPACE
