SUMMARY:Bee Walk
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn about the bumblebees that can be found in Wild Ouseburn\, and contribute to local and national records\, to help protect their future? \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday 18 June\, 12.00-13.30 we will be taking a walk from City Stadium down to Ballast Hills and noting of all the Bumblebees we see along the way. James Common from the Natural History Society of Northumbria will be leading the session\, and all records will feed into both Wild Ouseburn data and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s national scheme to monitor the abundance of bumblebees across the country. \n\n\n\nWe’d love to establish a group of people who would like to do this each month\, through till September – you don’t need to have existing knowledge as we can learn together\, but if you already know your Bombus lucorum from your Bombus hortorum then that’s great too! The surveys are a collaboration between Ouseburn Trust\, Ouseburn Farm\, Wild Intrigue and NHSN. \n\n\n\nThe information collected through BeeWalk surveys is integral to monitoring how bumblebee populations change through time\, detecting early warning signs of declines\, as well as contributing to important long-term monitoring of changes in response to changes in land-use and climate change. \n\n\n\nPlease meet at City Stadium near the coffee cart and the newly planted meadow. SUMMARY:Bird Migration Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn for an illustrated talk that brings to life the incredible journeys birds make to reach our corner of the world each year. \n\n\n\nFrom the tidal Ouseburn to the lofty heights of the Tyne Bridge\, discover how Sand Martins\, Kittiwakes\, Swifts\, and other migratory birds travel thousands of miles across continents — facing storms\, deserts\, and oceans — just to nest and raise their young in our urban landscapes. \n\n\n\nWe’ll dive into the science and stories behind migration:– How do birds know where to go?– Why do they come back to the same spots year after year?– And what can we do to help them survive and thrive? \n\n\n\nWith beautiful images\, maps\, and videos\, we’ll explore the challenges these birds face\, the wonders of their journeys\, and the surprising ways our city supports their life.

SUMMARY:Sand Martin Survey
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wall Watchers – Help us keep track of Ouseburn’s Sand Martins!\n\n\n\nThe Lower Ouseburn Valley is home to Newcastle’s only urban Sand Martin colony! These small\, agile birds have been here since at least 1952\, though they haven’t been recorded every year. In 2023\, they made themselves at home in the sandstone wall right beneath The Free Trade Inn – an iconic spot with a view to match. \n\n\n\nTo learn more about these birds – how many are here\, whether they’re nesting successfully\, and how they’re doing overall – we launched our very first Sand Martin survey in 2024. A brilliant group of local volunteers stepped up to help\, and together they became the Wall Watchers – keeping an eye on the birds from spring through summer. \n\n\n\nNow\, we’re getting ready to do it all again – and we’d love for you to join us! Whether you’re a seasoned or aspiring Wall Watcher\, these surveys are a great way learn about  these gorgeous birds and spend time outdoors in good company. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be running two survey sessions during Sand Martin Week\, with regular check-ins through summer\, right up until the Sand Martins head back to Africa in August. \n\n\n\nNo experience needed – just bring your curiosity (and maybe a camping chair and a pair of binoculars if you have them). We’ll show you what to look for and how to record what you see. \n\n\n\nCome along\, meet some lovely people\, and help us keep tabs on one of Ouseburn’s most charming little residents! \n\nMeet outside of The Cycle Hub

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Sand Martin Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Discover the ecology\, migration and family lives of Ouseburn’s charming summer residents\n\n\n\nThis free exhibition is a great opportunity to pop in and find out all about these intriguing little birds which spend their summers with us in Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nThe first reference to Sand Martins in Ouseburn was in 1952\, when it was a very different place! In 2023\, Wild Ouseburn recorded the first known nesting attempt of Sand Martins for many years\, in the sandstone wall beneath The Free Trade Inn. Following community surveys in 2024 and a crowdfunder\, Newcastle’s very first artificial Sand Martin bank was installed at the mouth of Ouseburn this March. \n\n\n\nWe think these migratory marvels deserve a week all about them\, so come along to the BottleWorks to find out about the ecology\, fascinating nesting behaviours\, mindblowing migration\, and other intriguing insights into the Sand Martin. \n\n\n\nThis free exhibition is open 10am to 5pm daily between Thursday 12th to Monday 16th June 2025. No need to book\, just pop by! \n\n\n\nWhat3Words for BottleWorks ///eggs.offers.falls
