In 2023\, they made themselves at home and began nesting in the sandstone wall between The Free Trade Inn and The Cycle Hub. \n\n\n\nThe Ouseburn Sand Martin colony has returned from West Africa to spend another summer with us\, so it’s time for some Wall Watching! \n\n\n\nWall Watchers spend an hour keeping watch of designated holes – this helps to track which holes are occupied\, how many birds are present\, and monitor the success of their fledgelings throughout the season. This information helps us monitor an the growth of the Ouseburn colony\, and contributes to national data on Sand Martins. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome + no experience is needed – you’ll be shown how to spot the birds and record your sightings. If you have binoculars\, bring them with you\, otherwise we’ll have some to use. You might like to bring a camping chair\, a drink and a snack to make a morning of it \n\n\n\nCome along\, meet some lovely people\, and help us keep tabs on one of Ouseburn’s most charming little residents! \n\n\n\nDid you know: To help support the growth of the colony\, a Wild Ouseburn community crowdfunder was launched in 2024 to fund the installation of an artificial Sand Martin nest bank on Northumbrian Water land at the mouth of the burn in spring 2025. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE TALK\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome back wonderful Duncan Wise from Northumberland National Park\, for an enchanting and fascinating evening discovering our starscape. Duncan was instrumental in securing theNorthumberland International Dark Sky Park status in 2013\, and has continued to be a passionate advocate of its continued protection and exploration. \n\n\n\nIn his fascinating talk hosted at Ouseburn Farm\, Duncan will share his expert tips into how – even in the urban environment – we can better conserve our dark skies for wildlife\, and our own health and wellbeing. We will also delve into the various ways to enjoy stargazing; from specialist apps to discovering some of the best locations to become immersed in the star-dusted night-sky. \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, Duncan will also host a guided stargazing session in Ouseburn Woods\, with the use of Northumberland National Park’s specialist binoculars and telescopes. Fingers crossed for clear skies..! If you are unable to attend the stargazing session\, you’re very welcome to just come along to the talk.  \n\n\n\nWe first welcomed Duncan to Ouseburn in 2023 as part of the Wild Ouseburn Dark Skies programme of events\, which celebrated nocturnal wildlife and explored ways to protect urban dark skies for wildlife and people.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re delighted to feature Duncan’s talk as part of a small collection of Wild Ouseburn dark skies events\, as part of the newly launched North East Dark Skies Festival.   \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. DESCRIPTION:An after-dark exploration of Ouseburn Woods under a starlit canopy.\n\n\n\nDuring the February New Moon\, when the night-sky is at its darkest\, a celestial canopy of starlight shines its brightest. \n\n\n\nThanks to the rich darkness of the nearby Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, we can enjoy an essence of its beauty from areas in the city tucked away from the trespass of artificial light. \n\n\n\nTraditionally considered a time of renewal and growth – of longer days as we slowly emerge from the Winter – the February New Moon offers a great opportunity for grounding and inspiration. Perhaps we’ll ignore it’s connection to spring cleaning for now though… \n\n\n\nJoin Heather from Wild Ouseburn for a guided\, women’s walk through Ouseburn Woods and City Stadium\, in search of tranquil darkness\, to gaze upon the stars. For the past 7 years\, Heather has wandered through Ouseburn Woods at night to survey bats\, and will share intriguing insights into the wildlife which benefits from these wild\, dark spaces. \n\n\n\nThis free event is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in connection with the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival. \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET \n\nHeather will be waiting outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm for a 7pm start\, from there\, you’ll slowly head into Ouseburn Woods and up to City Stadium – perfect spots for stargazing. Binoculars will be available for use on the night\, which offer a great way to look deeper into the starscape. DESCRIPTION:Come and show your love for Wild Ouseburn’s residents – from flowers to humans\, birds to hedgehogs – on a group litter pick at St Lawrence Park and Byker Link. \n\n\n\nThis litter pick has been arranged to remove litter from vegetation before the peak bird nesting season. On the day\, you’ll be introduced to litter picking with wildlife in mind – such as hibernating hedgehogs – along with a chance to find out more about the wildlife of the area with Heather from Wild Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nWrap up warm and wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions\, be sure to wear good footwear too! You might like to bring a flask of hot tea or coffee and some snacks. \n\n\n\nOther than that\, you don’t need to bring anything with you – just your best Litter Critter energy to spruce up these valuable wild spaces!  \n\n\n\nGloves will be provided\, along with litter pickers with thanks to the Ouseburn Trust. SUMMARY:Love Birds: Nest Box installation in St Lawrence Park
DESCRIPTION:14th February is known as Valentine’s Day\, but it’s also the start of National Nest Box Week! \n\n\n\nCome along and help our local ‘love birds’ get ready for the nesting season with the installation of new nest boxes in St Lawrence Park. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be installing Schwegler boxes (pictured) which are renowned for lasting for 20 – 25 years\, for  small-hole nesters (such as Blue Tits and Great Tits)\, Starlings\, and House Sparrows.  \n\n\n\nThis will contribute to the Wild Ouseburn Nest Box Scheme\, which already has 30 boxes installed in Ouseburn Woods\, Ballast Hill and St Ann’s Churchyard. Throughout spring\, the boxes will be surveyed by Wild Ouseburn volunteers through the BTO Nest Record Scheme\, and fledgelings ringed by a licensed ringer. In 2025\, the current Wild Ouseburn Nest Boxes had an incredible 80 chicks fledge successfully! \n\n\n\nWe need help to carry nest boxes\, and this is a great opportunity to come and learn about local birds\, so wrap up warm and come show your love for Wild Ouseburn’s residents!  \n\n\n\nYou don’t need to bring anything with you\, but wrap up and dress for the weather conditions. SUMMARY:Urban Rewilding Sessions | St Ann's Wood
DESCRIPTION:About St Ann’s Wood \n\nSt Ann’s Wood is comprised of a primarily single-aged tree structure\, which has become overshaded through a lack of intervention. \n\n\n\nNaturally\, trees would be crashed through by large herbivores in their early stages\, or nibbled and gnawed at\, restricting the growth of some. Without this ‘pressure’\, they quickly reach higher and higher for the light\, and in turn can overshadow the understory.  \n\n\n\nThis reduces the layers of a woodland – canopy to scrub to wildflower mosaics\, and all the wonderful\, wildlife supporting complexities this provides. although St Ann’s Wood is small\, it provides an important corridor for an array of wildlife to navigate through and nest – including Foxes and Hedgehogs\, and Sparrowhawks and Jays. \n\n\n\nWhat we’ll be doing \n\nIn collaboration with Wild Ouseburn the Ouseburn Trust\, funded through Newcastle Nature Networks\, has recently organised some light management works to begin improving the wood for wildlife. \n\n\n\nUsing the wood from recently felled trees\, we’ll be creating microhabitats such as wood piles and dead-hedged to replicate some of the benefits of scrub and deadwood which are currently lacking in the wood. \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to be undertaking this Rewilding Session together with the Ouseburn Trust\, with support from Newcastle Nature Networks and the Ouse Burn Way Fund. \n\n\n\nMEETING POINT \n\nMeet at 9.50am by the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn\, Stepney Bank\, Ouseburn\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PW. \n\n\n\nThe What3Words for the meeting location is: brick.repair.frogs \n\n\n\nFrom there we’ll walk to St Ann’s Wood\, which is adjacent to the Wild Roots Community Garden. \n\n\n\nDATE + TIME \n\nSaturday 14th February. \n\nThe session runs from 10am to 12pm. SUMMARY:Scrub Planting at City Stadium
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to rewild the City Stadium. We’ll be planting scrub and spring bulbs to help make the park more biodiverse. \n\n\n\nScrub\, and its edges\, are one of the most important habitats for wildlife. Young thorny trees and brambles begin the process of change from a grassland to woodland. In areas of scrub\, you can find a whole range of different habitats (known as ‘mosaics’) with grassland\, young thorny trees\, and woodland all being present at different stages and times. These dynamic habitats means that they become incredibly valuable place for wildlife\, providing different niches for a large number of species. \n\n\n\nIn the urban landscape\, especially our parks\, scrub is often one of the first habitats to be lost\, or prevented from growing. In Wild Ouseburn we’re also seeing loss of scrub through development pressures. Through our bird territory mapping surveys\, we have identified opportunities to plant new scrub in the City Stadium to support breeding birds\, but also a wide range of other species. The scrub planting will complement this year’s wildflower meadow creation to create a more biodiverse landscape\, and reinstate some of the scrub lost to a neighbouring development.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll be planting thorny and understory tree species including; Hazel\, Blackthorn\, Crab Apple\, Elder\, Dog Rose and Rowan which have been provided by Woodland Trust as part of their Community Tree Packs. Alongside this\, we’ll also be planting spring bulbs in the shadier woodland edges which have been provided by Newcastle City Council\, to help support early emerging pollinators. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to take part\, you don’t need any experience – we’ll show you what to do – and we’ll have gloves and some spades available to use. We invite you to take part in this interactive workshop\, to share YOUR thoughts on: \n\n\n\nHow would you like to see Wild Ouseburn run in future years?\n\nAre there wildlife or habitats which you would like to learn more about?\n\nWhat local environmental challenges concern you\, and how can Wild Ouseburn help to provide solutions?\n\nWhat are the immediate and long term projects we should focus on?… and lots more\n\n\n\nYou’ll have the chance to imagine and plan Ouseburn’s Wild Future in different creative ways\, throughout and after the event. \n\n\n\nThis event will be a welcoming space for everyone to consider and share their perspectives of nature in the Lower Ouseburn Valley; whether you’re a local resident\, a visitor to Ouseburn\, a business or charity intrigued by local wildlife… Urban rewilding projects are most successful as catalysts for positive chance when they’re rooted in the communities who truly know and love the area. DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to seed new wildflower meadows at City Stadium!\n\n\n\nAfter the success of last year’s wildflower meadow at City Stadium\, it’s now time to sow the seeds of the new wildflower meadow areas that we’ve been creating over the last few weeks. \n\n\n\nWhat was once 4000 squared metres of mowed amenity grassland is now ready to transform into a beautiful bloom of colour\, to support wildlife in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. From bats and birds\, to butterflies and bees\, the City Stadium meadows will provide new areas for wildlife to live and feed\, as well as a spectacular display of life and colour for us all to enjoy. \n\n\n\nBe part of this transformation\, and join us on Sunday 26th October to help us spread the wildflower seeds. Ouseburn Folk Choir will be serenading our seed spreading\, and there will be a chance to take a packet of wildflower seeds home too! \n\n\n\nThe City Stadium wildflower meadows have been created as part of Wild Ouseburn\, to rewild the Lower Ouseburn Valley. SUMMARY:Urban Rewilding Sessions - Large Herbivore Day
DESCRIPTION:Our Lost Large Herbivores + Scrub 🦬\n\nOur plants and trees evolved alongside large herbivores like Bison\, Boar\, Beavers\, Elk and Aurochs – and have developed ways to cope with the pressures of living alongside such heavy-hooved\, hungry creatures. \n\n\n\nFor example\, Bramble and Hawthorn have sharp thorns to make sure they don’t get munched too much\, and Willow produce fresh shoots quickly to compensate for not having such defences. \n\n\n\nIn Britain\, whilst some species such as the Beaver are making a slow recovery from extinction\, we have largely lost this important natural process – particularly in cities. \n\n\n\nHowever our ecosystems still need this natural “disturbance” to grow and flourish. This is where YOU come in \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we’ll be doing\n\nWhile it would be pretty exciting to see Bison and Boar roaming around City Stadium\, we’ll instead be taking on the role of these lost herbivores and replicating the natural relationship which has evolved between them and our ecosystems. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be focussing on managing understorey species like Bramble and Hawthorn – to do this we’ll be using tools such as shears to “nibble” or “browse” in a naturalistic way. You might be surprised just how easy (and fun!) it is to get into the mind of a nibbling Bison\, a stomping Auroch or a rootling Boar. \n\n\n\nInstead of managing our greenspaces in a human-centred way\, if we understand how our ecosystems function\, we can also boost urban greenspaces for biodiversity. \n\n\n\nWe call this Urban Rewilding – by replicating lost natural processes\, we can help our urban landscapes reach their maximum potential for wildlife – and have a lush day out in nature! \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to be undertaking this approach in partnership with the Newcastle Parks & Allotments Team and the Ouseburn Trust’s Saturday volunteer sessions. \n\n\n\nLOCATION FOR WILD OUSEBURN SESSION \n\nMeet at 9.50am by the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn\, Stepney Bank\, Ouseburn\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PW. \n\n\n\nThe What3Words for the meeting location is: brick.repair.frogs \n\n\n\nFrom there we’ll walk to the City Stadium. \n\n\n\nDATE + TIME \n\nSaturday 25th October.  \n\nThe session runs from 10am to 12pm. DESCRIPTION:The City Stadium Wildflower Meadow 🌼 \n\n\n\nIn spring 2025\, a lovely new wildflower meadow was created by the Wild Ouseburn project at the City Stadium in Shieldfield\, Newcastle. This was following a Bat Survey which showed Common Pipistrelles feeding in the area for the very first time\, thanks to a “Let it Grow” campaign by Urban Green (now Newcastle Parks & Allotments). \n\n\n\nSpecies-rich grasslands and meadows have declined in the Lower Ouseburn Valley\, something which has occured throughout Britain\, causing drastic declines in the abundance and diversity of wildlife – in particular pollinators such as butterflies\, bees and moths. \n\n\n\nBy understanding natural processes\, we can rewild our cities – boosting the urban landscape for wildlife as well as people. \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to work on the City Stadium meadows in partnership with Newcastle Parks & Allotments. \n\n\n\nImage: Birds-eye view of the City Stadium wildflower meadow\, with paths running throughout\, created in Spring 2025. DESCRIPTION:Come along to the first Ouseburn Wild Talk of the year – for a lush evening revisiting some of Wild Ouseburn’s 2025 highlights\, along with future ambitions with Cain Scrimgeour from Wild Intrigue. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. This year’s talk series is supported by the the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way fund. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nWith so much to reflect on\, and much more to look forward to\, the first Ouseburn Wild Talk series of the season will be all about Wild Ouseburn. This will be a lovely opportunity for everyone to come together and see just how much has been achieved together for wildlife in the Lower Ouseburn Valley this past year. \n\n\n\nFrom the installation of Newcastle’s first urban Sand Martin nest bank early in spring\, to further rewilding of City Stadium this autumn\, and much more in between. Wildlife highlights will feature too of course! We’d love you to share your favourite wild moments of the year too if you fancy.  \n\n\n\nCain will share some of the year’s highlights\, as well as insights into the next steps for Wild Ouseburn. This autumn the project was awarded £84\,600 through the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way fund\, to support the next 3 years of wildlife surveying and rewilding in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. SUMMARY:Grassland Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn a new skill to help make Ouseburn an even better place for wildlife! \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to welcome James Common from the Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN) who will host a series of Grassland Survey training sessions. These will include plant identification techniques and instruction on survey methodologies\, such as using quadrats to record and track plant diversity. \n\n\n\nThese standardised surveys will be conducted repeatedly over the coming years\, providing reliable comparative data that will help improve grassland management in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. If you’re interested in continuing these surveys after the training\, there will be opportunities to volunteer with ongoing support. \n\n\n\nSpecies-rich grassland has declined in the area in recent years\, which\, combined with other factors\, has led to wildlife decreases—particularly affecting butterfly diversity and abundance (as documented by Prof. Mike Jeffries). These habitats are a crucial resource for many invertebrates and the wildlife that depends on them as a food source\, including birds and bats. \n\n\n\nWe’ve to manage areas of grassland in the Valley with scythes – it’s an excellent wildlife-friendly approach\, allowing us to leave mixed lengths of vegetation to support a variety of species\, and it’s a super-sociable and healthy way to work together as a group. \n\n\n\nThe surveys and grassland management are a collaboration between Ouseburn Trust\, Ouseburn Farm\, Wild Intrigue and NHSN. Data collected from these Grassland Surveys will contribute to Wild Ouseburn’s long-term datasets on species and habitats in the Lower Ouseburn Valley\, helping us better understand current conditions and identify opportunities to support wildlife in this urban landscape. \n\n\n\nAll sessions will run from 16.00-17.30. \n\nWe’ll meet at the southern end of City Stadium\, by the allotments and the bottle sculpture \n\nWhat3Words gifts.name.cape \n\nYou can come to all\, or just one of two… \n\nThursday 20th May\n\nTuesday 17th June \n\nThursday 17th July

DESCRIPTION:Drop by the Wild Ouseburn Hub at any time to make a print of a pre-made linocut Sand Martin. \n\n\n\nThe Ouseburn Sand Martins arrived in 2023 to nest in a sandstone retaining wall beneath The Free Trade Inn\, and return from their wintering grounds in Africa to nest at the mouth of Ouseburn each summer. This March\, Wild Ouseburn installed a new artificial Sand Martin nest bank to help boost this colony – the only urban colony in Newcastle! \n\n\n\nNick Christie\, from Incubate Experimental Printmaking based in Cobalt Studios\, created some gorgeous linocut Sand Martins as part of our recent Sand Martin Week. We’re delighted to be able to re-use the plates for you to print your very own Ouseburn Sand Martin to take home at Ouseburn Festival! \n\n\n\nLush for all ages.
