DESCRIPTION:Explore Northumberland’s wild winter wonders\n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue and the Northumberland National Park astronomy team to discover the wild wonders of winter\, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Northumberland International Dark Sky Park‘s pioneering accreditation. \n\n\n\nNorthumberland is renowned and accredited for having the most pristine dark skies in England\, offering spectacular opportunities for stargazing\, particularly throughout autumn and winter. \n\n\n\nWith your feet firmly on the ground\, you will embark on an exploration of the Dark Sky Park in a fascinating\, expert-led stargazing workshop\, to explore the celestial blanket above with guided use of special telescopic equipment.  \n\n\n\nYou will take a short\, guided\, starlit stroll through Walltown to discover the intriguing ways wildlife benefits from dark skies\, and how different local animals cope through the winter months.  \n\n\n\nThroughout the evening you will be able to enjoy the warmth of Walltown’s cosy indoor room\, with hot chocolate and a wood-burner to keep you toasty. Here\, you will also discover how you can help to protect our dark skies and nocturnal wildlife\, in illustrated talks by Duncan Wise from the Northumberland National Park and Wild Intrigue. \n\n\n\nThis event is most suitable for ages 11 and above\, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder.  Please note that dogs are not permitted on this event. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. DESCRIPTION:Amongst the spectacular architecture of Newcastle\, incredible wildness can be found in our everyday explorations of the city. \n\n\n\nBetween Newcastle and Gateshead runs the tidal vein of the River Tyne. With its comings and goings between sea and land\, the scenery of the urban Quayside is ever-changing\, and so too is the wildlife which lives within and alongside it. \n\n\n\nOur Quayside is renowned as being home to the world’s most inland breeding colony of Black-legged Kittiwakes\, but also an incredible array of other\, perhaps surprising\, species. From familiar curb-side Feral Pigeons\, to awe-inspiring Peregrine Falcons\, which sit atop bridges\, viewing the city like magnificent gargoyles.  \n\n\n\nThe River Tyne was once a heavily polluted\, industrial river\, but now you can see Otters and Grey Seals feeding in the river\, Kittiwakes breeding on the stunning architecture and iconic Tyne Bridge\, Shelduck\, Teal\, and Redshank foraging amongst Dunston Staiths and a whole host of other species. \n\n\n\nJoin a Wild Intrigue guide for a journey along the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside\, to discover the wildlife that calls this city home. You’ll discover the history of the River Tyne\, and how its industrial past has shaped the wildlife that can now be found in the heart of this urban landscape. \n\n\n\nThis walking tour will be approximately 5 miles long\, following footpaths along the River Tyne. We’ll stop for lunch along the banks of the river to enjoy a delicious packed lunch from local social enterprise\, Big River Bakery.

SUMMARY:OUSEBURN DARK SKIES | Why Dark Skies Matter: Talk & Stargazing with Duncan Wise
DESCRIPTION:An evening exploring our place in the universe\n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome wonderful Duncan Wise from Northumberland National Park\, for our final Ouseburn Wild Talk of the season. \n\n\n\nDuncan was instrumental in securing International Dark Park status for Northumberland National Park in 2013\, and has continued to be a passionate advocate of its continued protection and exploration. This winter was the 10th Anniversary of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, and we are delighted to celebrate this by welcoming Duncan to Ouseburn to share the magnificence of the universe with us. \n\n\n\nIn his fascinating talk\, Duncan will share his expert tips into how – even in the city – we can better conserve our dark skies for wildlife\, and our own health and wellbeing. We will also delve into the various ways to enjoy stargazing; from specialist apps to discovering some of the best locations to become immersed in the star-dusted night-sky. \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, Duncan will also host a guided stargazing session in the Ouseburn Woods under the bridges\, with the use of Northumberland National Park’s telescopes. Fingers crossed for clear skies…. \n\n\n\nIf you are unable to attend the stargazing session\, you are very welcome to just come along to the talk.  \n\n\n\nThis event will also welcome in the launch of Ouseburn Dark Skies\, a long weekend celebrating our nocturnal wildlife and exploring ways to protect our dark skies for wildlife and people. Ouseburn Dark Skies is part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nHosted in the beautiful Ouseburn Farm meeting room on Thursday 21st March 2024.
