SUMMARY:Breakfast with Red Squirrels
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the arboreal life of the Red Squirrel\, in the mossy woodlands of RSPB Haweswater in the eastern Lake District National Park. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. For every Breakfast with Red Squirrels ticket sold\, you will be helping to support the conservation of Red Squirrels at this beautiful reserve.

SUMMARY:Beaver Enclosure Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEAVER ENCLOSURE\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to partner with the National Trust to offer a brand-new Beaver Enclosure Safari for 2024\, to share the incredible architecture and engineering developed by this beaver family. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue guides will share knowledge and experience as beaver ecologists while you explore this dynamic wetland habitat\, offering you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the ecology and intrigue of beavers in this beautiful corner of Northumberland. \n\n\n\nYou will see and learn about a range of beaver activities such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, fresh coppice shoots\, masterfully dug channels and the beavers’ famous dams. Beaver features such as these are complex and ever-changing\, making beaver wetlands one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back\, freshwater life such as dragonflies\, waterfowl and amphibians thrive – alongside many unexpected surprises\, such as butterflies feeding on sugar-rich sap on gnawed trees. \n\n\n\nBeavers are nocturnal mammals\, so viewing the animals themselves is highly unlikely on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, however the magic of this species lies in their incredible ecosystem engineering. There may be separate Wild Intrigue Beaver Watching Experiences launching\, however we are currently assessing the site to ensure these will not cause disturbance to the family\, and provide reliable viewing opportunities. \n\n\n\nThis dynamism makes our Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, to witness the impacts this Keystone Species can have on other plants\, animals and even the behaviour of water. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, and respond quickly to changes in waterflow\, food availability and family relationships. This means that each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, and itineraries will be flexible to accommodate busy beaver activities\, as well as the array of other wildlife in the area. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue has led community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland\, and has shared intrigue and knowledge of beavers through guided beaver experiences\, talks and events. We are delighted to now have the opportunity to share insights from our experience in Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nFor more information please visit the main Mini-Exped page. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321 ha estate.

SUMMARY:Spirit of the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Nestled between the River Coquet and Simonside hills in beautiful Northumberland\, lies Hepple Wilds\, a landscape of restoration and rejuvenation. \n\n\n\nSince 2020\, this 4000 acre estate has embraced natural processes\, and is on a journey of ecosystem restoration by encouraging wildness\, with gentle intervention where required. Free-roaming Longhorn cattle\, Highland cattle and Exmoor Ponies have been introduced. These magnificent animals help to create diverse ecosystems by creating openings\, transporting seed and nutrients which encourages more diverse plants\, scrub and trees\, supporting a wealth of wildlife including moths\, beetles\, birds and bats. \n\n\n\nThere is another\, delicious benefit to nature restoration – the produce that we can enjoy from a healthy landscape. There are few that manage to capture the unique character of a wilder landscape more truly than the Hepple Spirits Co. \n\n\n\nOur “Spirit of the Wild” experience is an exploration of the wild and delicious benefits that are created by nature and Hepple Spirits Co and strengthened by the nature-led ethosand light-touch management of the Hepple Estate. \n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a walking sunset safari in Hepple Wilds\, at the magical time of day when birds come home roost\, and crepuscular wildlife begins to emerge.  \n\n\n\nThe richness of plants and restored wetland on the Hepple Estate supports an impressive stock of food for nocturnal wildlife. The wilder land offers opportunities for small mammals to manoeuvre away from Tawny Owls and Barn Owls\, frequently observed hunting on the estate\, along with Red Foxes and Badgers. The rich moth and insect life also supports bats including Common and Soprano Pipistrelles\, which hunt the diverse habitat edges. \n\n\n\nAfter exploring Hepple Wilds\, you will be guided in a fascinating tour and tasting at the Hepple Spirits distillery by Walter Riddell\, Founder of Hepple Spirits and Cultivator of Hepple Estate . You will discover how art\, science and nature combine in the distillery to produce spirits which hold the character and flavour of the botanicals used – many of which are harvested on the Hepple Estate. Aftersampling some of the drinks\, will have the opportunity to buy bottles to take home with you\, from the creator of Hepple Spirits himself. \n\n\n\nWe are incredibly proud to support the work of Hepple Wilds through our Spirit of the Wild experience.

SUMMARY:Tyne Kittiwake Safari
DESCRIPTION:The Tyne Kittiwake colony is renowned as the world’s most inland breeding colony of Black-legged Kittiwakes. Each spring these gulls return from wintering on the open ocean to nest on our urban cliff-faces of buildings\, bridges and lampposts\, and for a few months of the year\, the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside transforms into a wild seabird Mecca.  \n\n\n\nJust as the tidal River Tyne has ebbed and flowed for generations\, the Kittiwake – a truly pelagic (sea) gull by nature – is a natural link to our coastal heritage in the North East.  \n\n\n\nUnlike their cousins\, such as Herring Gulls and Black-headed Gulls\, which have adapted to urban life and human food sources\, our Tyne Kittiwakes follow the Tyne out to the North Sea to feed each day on fish such as Sand Eels.  \n\n\n\nSo why\, for the past 60 years\, have the Tyne Kittiwakes ventured further inland – away from the oceanic food upon which they still feed? And how is the local community responding to sharing the Quayside with Kittiwakes each year? \n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue\, members of the Tyne Kittiwake Partnership\, for a Tyne Kittiwake Safari around the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this urban seabird spectacle\, and to discuss the history and precarious future of this fascinating Red Listed species. \n\n\n\nThe profits from all of Wild Intrigue’s Kittiwake experiences go directly back to supporting the conservation of the colony\, helping to protect and celebrate our Geordie Kittiwakes into the future. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of wild encounters to enjoy in northern England\, explore
