SUMMARY:Beaver Enclosure Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEAVER ENCLOSURE\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to partner with the National Trust to offer a brand-new Beaver Enclosure Safari for 2024\, to share the incredible architecture and engineering developed by this beaver family. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue guides will share knowledge and experience as beaver ecologists while you explore this dynamic wetland habitat\, offering you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the ecology and intrigue of beavers in this beautiful corner of Northumberland. \n\n\n\nYou will see and learn about a range of beaver activities such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, fresh coppice shoots\, masterfully dug channels and the beavers’ famous dams. Beaver features such as these are complex and ever-changing\, making beaver wetlands one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back\, freshwater life such as dragonflies\, waterfowl and amphibians thrive – alongside many unexpected surprises\, such as butterflies feeding on sugar-rich sap on gnawed trees. \n\n\n\nBeavers are nocturnal mammals\, so viewing the animals themselves is highly unlikely on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, however the magic of this species lies in their incredible ecosystem engineering. There may be separate Wild Intrigue Beaver Watching Experiences launching\, however we are currently assessing the site to ensure these will not cause disturbance to the family\, and provide reliable viewing opportunities. \n\n\n\nThis dynamism makes our Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, to witness the impacts this Keystone Species can have on other plants\, animals and even the behaviour of water. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, and respond quickly to changes in waterflow\, food availability and family relationships. This means that each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, and itineraries will be flexible to accommodate busy beaver activities\, as well as the array of other wildlife in the area. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue has led community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland\, and has shared intrigue and knowledge of beavers through guided beaver experiences\, talks and events. We are delighted to now have the opportunity to share insights from our experience in Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nFor more information please visit the main Mini-Exped page. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington.

SUMMARY:Dusk Beaver Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE THE TRANQUILITY OF A BEAVER WETLAND\n\n\n\nAs the sun sets\, an intriguing creature missing from the Northumbrian landscape for 400 years\, emerges into its restored watery home. \n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue on a Dusk Beaver Safari at the National Trust Wallington beaver enclosure\, to observe the first beavers to have been restored in Northumberland. \n\n\n\nThe Wallington Beavers live in an ever-changing wetland crafted by their own engineering. As aquatic mammals\, beavers need a safe\, watery environment in which to live and raise their young\, which the Wallington Beavers have developed through the ongoing creation of dams.  \n\n\n\nThe phrase “Busy as a Beaver” comes to life when watching these industrious animals. Responding to the behaviour of water each night\, Beavers adapt dams\, dig channels\, and undertake essential maintenance. \n\n\n\nWetland engineering is hungry work\, and any respectable builder enjoys plenty of breaks to socialise. So amongst the hard work\, beavers spend a good amount of time feeding and spending time with their family members. \n\n\n\nThe banks of the burn are carpeted in colourful wildflowers and grasses\, along with regenerated trees such as willow\, which the Beavers forage on throughout the night. \n\n\n\nWith strong social bonds\, family members make time to groom\, play and communicate with one another. Observing these social mammals\, in the wetlands they have carefully crafted\, is one of the most enriching wildlife encounters you can enjoy. We are delighted that this is now possible in Northumberland thanks to the National Trust\, with support from the Reece Foundation and the Beaver Trust. \n\n\n\nFrom a raised position in the landscape\, you will enjoy views of the core beaver wetland amongst a bank of wildflowers. The wetland is home to an array of other species\, including Roe Deer\, Grey Heron\, Badgers and Otter – which may also make a special appearance. \n\n\n\nDusk Beaver Safaris will follow the Beaver Trust’s ethical beaver watching protocol\, in addition to Wild Intrigue’s 10 years of experience watching and sharing this spectacular species.  \n\n\n\nAlthough every effort has been made to share a successful encounter with the Beavers\, please understand that these are wild animals and views therefore cannot be guaranteed. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this experience is strictly adults (18+) only\, and once entered into the beaver enclosure\, attendees will be required to speak quietly.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Hayden Thorpe and the Tyne Kittiwakes
DESCRIPTION:Where there is nature\, there is music.\n\nWild Intrigue are delighted to collaborate with The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and Artist in Residence Hayden Thorpe for an evening exploration of wildness in the city. \n\n\n\nHayden Thorpe\, Artist in Residence with The Glasshouse\, is a musician and birdwatcher with an ambition to share the enchantment of urban nature. His installation entitled The Hide\, and the project’s associated music\, are inspired by Hayden’s experience of bird watching – an opportunity for stillness and reflection\, which can be enjoyed in even the most unlikely of places. \n\n\n\nThe Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside is the perfect location for The Hide installation to inspire moments of wildness. For 60 years\, before The Glasshouse stood on the banks of the Tyne\, the famous Tyne Kittiwakes have brought their wild oceanic calls to the heart of the Quayside. These delicate gulls are truly pelagic in nature\, entwined with the ocean\, they spend their winters out on the open sea – rarely touching land. \n\n\n\nIn spring\, Kittiwake pairs return to nest on the Quayside’s iconic Tyne Bridge and surrounding buildings\, raising families amongst us on these urban cliff faces. Feeding exclusively on Sand Eels and fish caught in the North Sea\, Kittiwakes never feed from the hands of man. \n\n\n\nTheir distinctive “Kitt-wake” calls are an acoustic celebration of our journey to live alongside wildlife in the city\, the ever-changing Quayside a welcoming home and refuge for the world’s most inland colony of the red listed Black-legged Kittiwake. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nthe experience\n\nJoin us at The Glasshouse for An Evening with Hayden Thorpe and the Tyne Kittiwakes. This one-off experience of music and urban wildlife will begin with an introduction to The Hide and a special acoustic performance by Hayden\, followed by a Tyne Kittiwake safari with wildlife guides\, Wild Intrigue. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy The Hide before and after the experience. \n\n\n\n18:00 – 19:00   Exclusive pre-event access to experience Hayden Thorpe’s installation\, The Hide\, at The Glasshouse. \n\n\n\n19:00 – 19:15  Introduction to The Hide and acoustic performance by Hayden Thorpe. \n\n\n\n19:15 – 20:00  Tyne Kittiwake Safari with Wild Intrigue. \n\n\n\n20:00 – 21:00  Return to The Glasshouse.
\n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321 ha estate.

SUMMARY:Night Out with Nightjars
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Awe in the Enchanted Forest\n\n\n\nAs the sun dips below the horizon and twilight descends upon the forests of the Tyne Valley\, the nocturnal world awakens. Among the creatures that stir\, one enigmatic bird has captivated human imagination for millennia—the elusive Nightjar. \n\n\n\nThese cryptically camouflaged birds undertake a remarkable journey\, migrating thousands of miles from Africa to our heathlands\, forests\, woodland edges\, and moorlands during the summer months. They return to Northumberland in May\, only to migrate back to Africa with the onset of September. \n\n\n\nAdorned with enormous\, otherworldly eyes\, mysterious whiskers known as rictal bristles\, and wide mouths\, Nightjars are perfectly adapted for their nocturnal lifestyle. Shrouded in mystery and superstition\, these birds have woven themselves into the very fabric of folklore. From the ancient myth of sucking goat’s milk—earning them the moniker ‘Goat Sucker’—to being revered as Odin’s night Ravens\, Nightjars have both created fear and inspiration through the ages. \n\n\n\nOne of the most enchanting experiences of the Nightjar encounter is their unique song—known as churring. As darkness envelops the forest\, the male Nightjar’s continuous\, mechanical churring sound fills the air\, an eerie and mesmerizing serenade that can last for minutes on end. This rhythmic\, otherworldly sound resonates through the stillness of the night\, creating an atmosphere of enchantment and mystery. It’s a rare auditory spectacle that immerses you in nature\, leaving you spellbound by the forest’s hidden symphony. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an enchanting evening where we delve into the secrets of the Nightjar and explore the other fascinating nocturnal wildlife that calls the Tyne Valley home. Let the magic of the forest night transport you to a place where nature’s wonders reveal themselves under the cloak of darkness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNight Out with Nightjars experiences will take place within 10 miles of Corbridge\, exact meeting location will be provided upon booking.

We are hosting a small number of Dusk Beaver Safaris in Summer 2024 to watch the Beavers and enjoy the tranquility of the Beaver wetland\, find out more here. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321 ha estate.

So join us to find out all about the bizarre anatomy and curious ecology of some of our longest-evolved mammals\, right here in the city. \n\n\n\nProfits from our 2024 Ouseburn Bat Safaris will be put into our new community rewilding project\, Wild Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of wild encounters to enjoy in northern England\, explore our full collection here.
