SUMMARY:OUSEBURN DARK SKIES | Why Dark Skies Matter: Talk & Stargazing with Duncan Wise
DESCRIPTION:An evening exploring our place in the universe\n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome wonderful Duncan Wise from Northumberland National Park\, for our final Ouseburn Wild Talk of the season. \n\n\n\nDuncan was instrumental in securing International Dark Park status for Northumberland National Park in 2013\, and has continued to be a passionate advocate of its continued protection and exploration. This winter was the 10th Anniversary of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, and we are delighted to celebrate this by welcoming Duncan to Ouseburn to share the magnificence of the universe with us. \n\n\n\nIn his fascinating talk\, Duncan will share his expert tips into how – even in the city – we can better conserve our dark skies for wildlife\, and our own health and wellbeing. We will also delve into the various ways to enjoy stargazing; from specialist apps to discovering some of the best locations to become immersed in the star-dusted night-sky. \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, Duncan will also host a guided stargazing session in the Ouseburn Woods under the bridges\, with the use of Northumberland National Park’s telescopes. Fingers crossed for clear skies…. \n\n\n\nIf you are unable to attend the stargazing session\, you are very welcome to just come along to the talk.  \n\n\n\nThis event will also welcome in the launch of Ouseburn Dark Skies\, a long weekend celebrating our nocturnal wildlife and exploring ways to protect our dark skies for wildlife and people. Ouseburn Dark Skies is part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nHosted in the beautiful Ouseburn Farm meeting room on Thursday 21st March 2024. Please aim to arrive for a 6pm start. \n\n\n\nWith thanks to the support of Malings Community Fund and Northumberland National Park in Ouseburn Dark Skies.

SUMMARY:Noctalgia: Dark Skies Matter | Ouseburn exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Casting light on nocturnal wildlife\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome the enchantment of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park to Ouseburn\, with the spectacular exhibition\, Noctalgia: Dark Skies Matter\, created by Ouseburn-based artist Bethan Maddocks. \n\n\n\nThis beautiful series of sculptures play with light and cast mesmerising shadows around the exhibition space of the BottleWorks gallery space in Ouseburn. Featuring delicately cut imagery of shooting stars\, the Milky Way\, hunting owls\, night pollinating plants and insects\, the sculpture is a tribute to the visible stars\, creatures\, and plants that thrive under Northumberland’s pristine dark skies. \n\n\n\nAs visitors step into the darkened gallery\, the sculptures will cast intricate shadows of these paper-cut creations onto the walls\, creating an immersive and emotional artwork that is nothing short of theatrical. \n\n\n\nNoctalgia is a new term invented by astronomers to describe the pain associated with losing access to the night sky due to light pollution: “noctalgia\,” meaning “sky grief.” This particularly resonates with our diminishing access to dark skies in the city\, as electric light sources trespasses ever-more into our starscape. \n\n\n\nCommissioned by Northumberland National Park Authority and generously supported by the Sir James Knott Trust\, this innovative exhibition has been created by visual artist Bethan Maddocks\, in collaboration with community groups and visitors through creative activities and workshops. \n\n\n\nThe Noctalgia exhibition forms a key part of Ouseburn Dark Skies\, a long weekend celebrating our nocturnal wildlife and exploring ways to restore and protect our dark skies for wildlife and people. Discover the full Ouseburn Dark Skies programme here. \n\n\n\nWe are incredibly grateful to Bethan Maddocks and Northumberland National Park for partnering with Wild Intrigue to share this exhibition through Ouseburn Dark Skies\, to shed light on the interconnectedness between our natural world and the celestial wonders within the darkness above. \n\n\n\nWith thanks to Malings Community Fund for their support in Ouseburn Dark Skies. \n\nImage: Noctalgia artwork in The Sill | Kate Buckingham \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOCTALGIA LAUNCH EVENT with BETHAN MADDOCKS \n\n\n\nFRIDAY 24TH MARCH 6pm – 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION OPENING HOURS\n\n\n\nFRIDAY 24TH MARCH \n\n10am – 5pm \n\n\n\nSATURDAY 23RD MARCH \n\n10am – 2pm \n\n5pm – 7pm \n\n\n\nSUNDAY 24TH MARCH \n\n10am – 7pm \n\n\n\nMONDAY 25TH MARCH \n\n10am – 5pm \n\n\n\nNo need to book\, just come by
