SUMMARY:Frogs & Flapjacks - Racy Ghyll
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale\, James Rebanks\, his family\, and their Racy Ghyll Farm have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep\, but most recently James’ strong advocation of nature-friendly farming\, and his acclaimed book The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District\, and recently published English Pastoral | An Inheritance. \n\n\n\nThis Mini Exped explores life emerging below and above the surface of newly created wetlands at Racy Ghyll Farm. At each stage of life within a wetland\, drama unfolds! From minute dragonfly larve and water beetles prowling for prey\, to grey herons and badgers searching for abundant amphibians. \n\n\n\nEmbark upon an underwater safari with a difference with Wild Intrigue\, but leave those wetsuits at home! There’ll be no need to jump in\, as specialist equipment designed to spy on creatures beneath the surface will be available\, including pond survey nets\, to humanely capture freshwater invertebrates and discover their brilliant and bizarre ecology. \n\n\n\nYou will not only have the opportunity to see life beneath the surface\, but also to listen to underwater creatures too! Using hydrophone technology\, and a touch of magic\, Wild Intrigue will introduce you to the unexpected sounds of wetland life emerging at Racy Ghyll Farm\, bringing to life a whole new hidden world of animal acoustics. \n\n\n\nNo Wild Intrigue Mini Exped is complete without a delicious treat\, so locally sourced flapjacks* and drinks will be available to enjoy throughout. Why flapjacks? Well Frogs & Flapjacks was actually coined by American actor Nick Offerman when he visited Racy Ghyll in 2019… you know what\, it’s a long story\, come and join us and we’ll tell you all about it! \n\n\n\nThe purchase of each ticket contributes to the support of nature-friendly farming at Racy Ghyll Farm\, and in turn the wildlife this benefits in this corner of the Lake District National Park. \n\n\n\n*Please note that James and Helen Rebanks are understandably very busy people\, so they may not be available during this event. If we are very lucky\, Helen may be available to prepare the home-baked goodies for us. \n\n\n\nWhy not take a look at our other Mini Expeds taking place at Racy Ghyll Farm? Many share the same date\, so you could make a weekend of it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRacy Ghyll Farm is located only a short drive from Keswick or Penrith\, in the beautiful Matterdale Valley in the Lake District north of Ullswater. The exact address and tailored directions will be provided upon booking.

SUMMARY:Moths & Muffins - Racy Ghyll
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale\, James Rebanks\, his family and their Racy Ghyll Farm have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep\, but most recently James’ strong advocation of nature-friendly farming\, and his acclaimed books The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District and his recently published English Pastoral | An Inheritance. \n\n\n\nTraditional farming methods adopted at Racy Ghyll\, such as wildflower meadow restoration and altered grazing regimes\, benefit a diversity of moth species. The farm and its surrounding landscape offer an interesting mosaic of habitats which support a variety of beautiful moth species including Garden Tiger\, Beautiful Golden Y\, Poplar Hawkmoth and Green Carpet. \n\n\n\nThe morning will start with a fascinating insight into moths by Wild Intrigue\, accompanied by hot drinks and delicious muffins made locally\, before we had out to collect the moth traps. \n\n\n\nA kaleidoscope of colour awaits! Whilst your Wild Intrigue guides go through identifying and recording the species\, you will have the opportunity to take photographs of these under-appreciated night-pollinators. \n\n\n\nMoth trapping is vital for conservation. Many moths are are our nocturnal pollinators and have an important role in ecosystems\, so they are indicators of changes in the climate and habitats. Once captured and recorded all the moths are safely released back to the wild.  \n\n\n\nThe purchase of each ticket contributes to the support of nature-friendly farming at Racy Ghyll Farm\, and in turn the wildlife this benefits in this corner of the Lake District National Park. \n\n\n\nPlease note that James and Helen Rebanks are understandably very busy people\, so they may not be available during this event. SUMMARY:Ospreys & Canapés Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Hiding amongst the vast forest and tranquil waters of Kielder lies one of northern England’s most outstanding conservation success stories; the return of the Osprey. \n\n\n\nFollowing a long history of human persecution and pressure from egg collecting\, this magnificent bird of prey was driven to extinction in England in 1840\, and ultimately throughout Britain when the last bird in Scotland disappeared in the early 1900’s. \n\n\n\nFor years our summer skies were absent of their presence\, until almost a century and a half after its extinction in Britain\, the Osprey returned – remarkably – through natural recolonisation. A second chance. \n\n\n\nGradually\, Ospreys returned to nest atop trees alongside lochs and lakes. First in Scotland\, then\, with a little support\, into England and Wales. \n\n\n\nIn June 2009\, the first Osprey pair raised three young at Kielder Forest; the first in over 200 years. Last year\, in 2021\, the Kielder population had risen to an impressive 7 pairs. \n\n\n\nThis incredible story of wildlife returning is not just one of success\, it’s one of hope and promise for the future.  \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for an experience like no other to celebrate Kielder’s magnificent birds of prey\, which once again soar the summer skies. \n\n\n\nThis uniquely tailored cruise offers a truly special opportunity to watch the Kielder Ospreys as they soar overhead and fish the tranquil water. Your Wild Intrigue guide will share the history\, ecology and inspiring conservation story of the Osprey\, and their expert eyes and ears will ensure you have the best chance of watching the birds themselves. \n\n\n\nIn true Wild Intrigue style\, Canapés and prosecco will be served on board\, which can be enjoyed on this 2.5 hour sunset cruise as we travel Kielder Water\, surrounded by the picturesque landscape. \n\n\n\nThis Ospreys & Canapés Cruise has been created in partnership with Kielder Waterside\, and will set sail on Kielder Water\, aboard the comfort of Kielder Waterside’s famous boat\, the “Osprey”.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Bat Safari
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Intrigue on this popular urban safari to discover some truly intriguing creatures of the night in Newcastle’s lively hub\, Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nFind out all about Britain’s impressive diversity of bats before heading off\, with bat detectors in hand\, to track bats down as they emerge from their roosts and forage. Bat detectors bring a whole new level to spying on bats\, allowing you to eavesdrop on their ultrasound clicks\, slaps and pops as they hunt for ‘breakfast’ and communicate with each other. You will have use of Magenta 4 detectors on the night\, perfect for tuning in and turning UP ‘bat chat’. \n\n\n\nPerhaps we will see Common Pipistrelles hunting\, which weigh as little as a 20 pence coin\, or Daubentons bats trawling insects over the River Tyne after sunset. \n\n\n\nAssociated with vampires and all things spooky\, bats suffer from a bad rep across the world. We’re not havin’ that! Bats have cruised our skies for tens of millions of years – way before the first human took the first step. So join us to find out all about the bizarre anatomy and curious ecology of some of our longest-evolved mammals\, right here in Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of wild encounters to enjoy in Northern England\, explore our full collection here.
