This year’s talk series is supported by the the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way fund. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK + SPEAKER\n\n\n\nWhen wildlife photographer Luke Massey and his partner\, writer Katie Stacey\, first discovered a derelict dairy farm in the mountains of northern Spain\, they had no idea it would become the centre of a long-term rewilding project – and the place where they would build a home and raise their two sons. \n\n\n\nNow seven years into the Wild Finca journey\, Luke shares how they have transformed an abandoned\, overgrazed landscape into a thriving mosaic of meadows\, woodlands and wetlands. DESCRIPTION:Curious about Ouseburn’s birds? Join us for a hour of birdwatching in Ouseburn Woods\, to celebrate the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch weekend! \n\n\n\nOn the day we’ll listen to bird songs and calls\, along with watching them\, and you’ll hear some tips on identifying species with these unique features. From the leaf-litter rustling of Thrushes\, to the wing-whistling of Woodpigeons and the jam-packed\, 80-note song of the Wren. \n\n\n\nAt this time of year we’re welcoming a lot of birds on passage back to their breeding grounds – such as the beautiful Redwing – and hearing a distinctive change to the soundscape of Ouseburn Woods as the birds begin their courtship rituals.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll have a few pairs of binoculars to borrow\, bring some along if you have your own pair! DESCRIPTION:Help create new habitats (and topography) at the City Stadium this February!During October’s wildflower meadow creation\, the leftover turf rolls were used to create a more undulating landscape at the City Stadium. These  mounds will provide a new topographical features within the landscape\, providing new habitat microclimates for wildlife. \n\n\n\nThey’ve been an incredible visual success for people walking through\, so we’ve been given permission by the NCC Parks team to create some more! \n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday 7th February to design and create these new features. Everyone is welcome\, all tools and gloves will be provided. Just bring clothes and shoes that are suitable for the weather\, and that you don’t mind getting muddy – you might like to bring a drink and snacks too. Without this ‘pressure’\, they quickly reach higher and higher for the light\, and in turn can overshadow the understory.  \n\n\n\nThis reduces the layers of a woodland – canopy to scrub to wildflower mosaics\, and all the wonderful\, wildlife supporting complexities this provides. although St Ann’s Wood is small\, it provides an important corridor for an array of wildlife to navigate through and nest – including Foxes and Hedgehogs\, and Sparrowhawks and Jays. \n\n\n\nWhat we’ll be doing \n\nIn collaboration with Wild Ouseburn the Ouseburn Trust\, funded through Newcastle Nature Networks\, has recently organised some light management works to begin improving the wood for wildlife. \n\n\n\nUsing the wood from recently felled trees\, we’ll be creating microhabitats such as wood piles and dead-hedged to replicate some of the benefits of scrub and deadwood which are currently lacking in the wood. \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to be undertaking this Rewilding Session together with the Ouseburn Trust\, with support from Newcastle Nature Networks and the Ouse Burn Way Fund. \n\n\n\nMEETING POINT \n\nMeet at 9.50am by the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn\, Stepney Bank\, Ouseburn\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PW. \n\n\n\nThe What3Words for the meeting location is: brick.repair.frogs \n\n\n\nFrom there we’ll walk to St Ann’s Wood\, which is adjacent to the Wild Roots Community Garden. \n\n\n\nDATE + TIME \n\nSaturday 14th February. \n\nThe session runs from 10am to 12pm. DESCRIPTION:14th February is known as Valentine’s Day\, but it’s also the start of National Nest Box Week! \n\n\n\nCome along and help our local ‘love birds’ get ready for the nesting season with the installation of new nest boxes in St Lawrence Park. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be installing Schwegler boxes (pictured) which are renowned for lasting for 20 – 25 years\, for  small-hole nesters (such as Blue Tits and Great Tits)\, Starlings\, and House Sparrows.  \n\n\n\nThis will contribute to the Wild Ouseburn Nest Box Scheme\, which already has 30 boxes installed in Ouseburn Woods\, Ballast Hill and St Ann’s Churchyard. Throughout spring\, the boxes will be surveyed by Wild Ouseburn volunteers through the BTO Nest Record Scheme\, and fledgelings ringed by a licensed ringer. In 2025\, the current Wild Ouseburn Nest Boxes had an incredible 80 chicks fledge successfully! \n\n\n\nWe need help to carry nest boxes\, and this is a great opportunity to come and learn about local birds\, so wrap up warm and come show your love for Wild Ouseburn’s residents!  \n\n\n\nYou don’t need to bring anything with you\, but wrap up and dress for the weather conditions. Perhaps we’ll ignore it’s connection to spring cleaning for now though… \n\n\n\nJoin Heather from Wild Ouseburn for a guided\, women’s walk through Ouseburn Woods and City Stadium\, in search of tranquil darkness\, to gaze upon the stars. For the past 7 years\, Heather has wandered through Ouseburn Woods at night to survey bats\, and will share intriguing insights into the wildlife which benefits from these wild\, dark spaces. \n\n\n\nThis free event is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in connection with the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival. \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET \n\nHeather will be waiting outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm for a 7pm start\, from there\, you’ll slowly head into Ouseburn Woods and up to City Stadium – perfect spots for stargazing. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE TALK\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome back wonderful Duncan Wise from Northumberland National Park\, for an enchanting and fascinating evening discovering our starscape. Duncan was instrumental in securing theNorthumberland International Dark Sky Park status in 2013\, and has continued to be a passionate advocate of its continued protection and exploration. \n\n\n\nIn his fascinating talk hosted at Ouseburn Farm\, Duncan will share his expert tips into how – even in the urban environment – we can better conserve our dark skies for wildlife\, and our own health and wellbeing. We will also delve into the various ways to enjoy stargazing; from specialist apps to discovering some of the best locations to become immersed in the star-dusted night-sky. \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, Duncan will also host a guided stargazing session in Ouseburn Woods\, with the use of Northumberland National Park’s specialist binoculars and telescopes. Fingers crossed for clear skies..! If you are unable to attend the stargazing session\, you’re very welcome to just come along to the talk.  \n\n\n\nWe first welcomed Duncan to Ouseburn in 2023 as part of the Wild Ouseburn Dark Skies programme of events\, which celebrated nocturnal wildlife and explored ways to protect urban dark skies for wildlife and people.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re delighted to feature Duncan’s talk as part of a small collection of Wild Ouseburn dark skies events\, as part of the newly launched North East Dark Skies Festival.   \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. DESCRIPTION:Explore Northumberland’s wild winter wonders\n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue and the Northumberland National Park astronomy team to discover the wild wonders of winter beneath the blanket of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. \n\n\n\nNorthumberland is renowned and accredited for having the most pristine dark skies in England\, offering spectacular opportunities for stargazing\, particularly throughout autumn and winter. \n\n\n\nWith your feet firmly on the ground\, you will embark on an exploration of the Dark Sky Park in a fascinating\, expert-led stargazing workshop\, to explore the celestial blanket above with guided use of special telescopic equipment.  \n\n\n\nUnder Wild Intrigue’s guidance\, you will take a short\, starlit stroll through Walltown Country Park to discover the intriguing ways wildlife benefits from dark skies\, and how different local animals cope through the winter months. \n\n\n\nThroughout the evening you will be able to enjoy the warmth of Walltown’s cosy indoor room\, with hot chocolate and a wood-burner to keep you toasty. Here\, you will also discover how you can help to protect our dark skies and nocturnal wildlife\, in illustrated talks by Duncan Wise from the Northumberland National Park and Wild Intrigue. \n\n\n\nTICKETS £15 per person. \n\n\n\nThis event is most suitable for ages 11 and above\, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder.  Please note that dogs are not permitted on this event. This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore.
