This beautiful spot is set in the heart of Northumberland National Park\, on the edge of Kielder Forest\, beneath the enchanting celestial blanket of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. \n\n\n\nUpon arriving at the Swallow Hut you will be greeted by your Wild Intrigue guides\, who will escort you to your al fresco dining table for the evening. Don’t let anyone tell you that nights in nature can’t be a tad fancy.  Once you’ve grabbed your first bottomless hot or cold drink of the night\, the fun begins as Wild Intrigue guide you into making your own stone-baked pizza\, with delicious pre-made dough. Which toppings will you choose? \n\n\n\nPlates emptied\, you will embark on a guided exploration of the crepuscular wildlife on site emerging with the setting sun. Perhaps you’ll hear Tawny Owls calling\, Roe Deer barking\, or the Blackbird’s bedtime melody. \n\n\n\nA cosy campfire will be waiting back at the Swallow Hut ready to toast marshmallows\, with a hot chocolate of course. As the sun dips\, you will set off on a Bat Safari to track down bats emerging from their roosts on the hunt for breakfast. You will be handed a bat detector to help you track down these elusive creatures of the night\, picking up their echolocation on route. SUMMARY:Spirit of the Wild
DESCRIPTION:Nestled between the River Coquet and Simonside hills in beautiful Northumberland\, lies Hepple Wilds\, a landscape of restoration and rejuvenation. \n\n\n\nSince 2020\, this 4000 acre estate has embraced natural processes\, and is on a journey of ecosystem restoration by encouraging wildness\, with gentle intervention where required. Free-roaming Longhorn cattle\, Highland cattle and Exmoor Ponies have been introduced. These magnificent animals help to create diverse ecosystems by creating openings\, transporting seed and nutrients which encourages more diverse plants\, scrub and trees\, supporting a wealth of wildlife including moths\, beetles\, birds and bats. \n\n\n\nThere is another\, delicious benefit to nature restoration – the produce that we can enjoy from a healthy landscape. There are few that manage to capture the unique character of a wilder landscape more truly than the Hepple Spirits Co. \n\n\n\nOur “Spirit of the Wild” experience is an exploration of the wild and delicious benefits that are created by nature and Hepple Spirits Co and strengthened by the nature-led ethos and light-touch management of the Hepple Estate. \n\n\n\nThe midsummer evening will begin with a short walk in part of Hepple Wilds\, at that magical time of day when dusk falls\, followed by an introduction to the Hepple Spirits distillery by Walter Riddell\, Founder of Hepple Spirits and Cultivator of Hepple Estate. You will discover how art and science combine in the distillery to produce spirits which hold the character and flavour of the botanical ingredients used – many of which are harvested on the Hepple Estate. You will be invited to sample some of the drinks\, and will have the opportunity to buy bottles to take home. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, you will head out with Wild Intrigue and Hepple Wilds guides\, to explore the bounty of wildlife that is emerging on the estate. \n\n\n\nYou will be introduced to nocturnal pollinators\, moths\, and the astounding diversity of forms and colours these vital creatures take. You will have the opportunity to visit ‘light traps’ which attract moths without harming them\, and find out how some of their exquisite names were formed\, such as Garden Tiger\, Peach Blossom and Beautiful Golden Y\, and if we are lucky\, a Juniper Carpet.  \n\n\n\nWith an abundance of moths and other insects benefitting from the rich plant life and wetlands at Hepple\, many species of bat hawk across the sky. With the specialist bat detectors provided you will eavesdrop on the bats as they forage and socialise. Don’t let anyone tell you that nights in nature can’t be a tad fancy.  Once you’ve grabbed your first bottomless hot or cold drink of the night\, the fun begins as Wild Intrigue guide you into making your own stone-baked pizza\, with delicious pre-made dough. Which toppings will you choose? \n\n\n\nPlates emptied\, you will embark on a guided exploration of the crepuscular wildlife on site emerging with the setting sun. Perhaps you’ll hear Tawny Owls calling\, Roe Deer barking\, or the Blackbird’s bedtime melody. \n\n\n\nA cosy campfire will be waiting back at the Swallow Hut ready to toast marshmallows\, with a hot chocolate of course. As the sun dips\, you will set off on a Bat Safari to track down bats emerging from their roosts on the hunt for breakfast. You will be handed a bat detector to help you track down these elusive creatures of the night\, picking up their echolocation on route. This rural glamping site is managed with wildlife at its heart\, and supports a rich mosaic of habitats that attract magical moth species such as the Burnished Brass\, Elephant Hawkmoth\, Peach Blossom\, and Garden Tiger. \n\n\n\nBased from the beautiful\, private Swallow Hut\, Wild Intrigue will introduce you to the beauty and importance of these misunderstood creatures. Intriguing discussions and insights into moths live-caught will be enjoyed\, over a tasty brekkie of locally sourced muffins and bottomless hot drinks\, of course. \n\n\n\nA kaleidoscope of colour awaits! As Wild Intrigue go through the traps to identify and record the species caught\, trying not to get overly excited in the process\, you will have the opportunity for some incredible photographs of these much under-rated invertebrates. \n\n\n\nMoth recording is vital for conservation. Moths have an important role in our ecosystems and are an indicator of changes in the climate and habitats.
