SUMMARY:Breakfast with Red Squirrels
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the arboreal life of the Red Squirrel\, in the mossy woodlands of RSPB Haweswater in the eastern Lake District National Park. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. For every Breakfast with Red Squirrels ticket sold\, you will be helping to support the conservation of Red Squirrels at this beautiful reserve.

SUMMARY:Frogs & Flapjacks - Racy Ghyll
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale\, James Rebanks\, his family\, and their Racy Ghyll Farm have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep\, but most recently James’ strong advocation of nature-friendly farming\, and his acclaimed book The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District\, and recently published English Pastoral | An Inheritance. \n\n\n\nThis Mini Exped explores life emerging below and above the surface of newly created wetlands at Racy Ghyll Farm. At each stage of life within a wetland\, drama unfolds! From minute dragonfly larve and water beetles prowling for prey\, to grey herons and badgers searching for abundant amphibians. \n\n\n\nEmbark upon an underwater safari with a difference with Wild Intrigue\, but leave those wetsuits at home! There’ll be no need to jump in\, as specialist equipment designed to spy on creatures beneath the surface will be available\, including pond survey nets\, to humanely capture freshwater invertebrates and discover their brilliant and bizarre ecology. \n\n\n\nYou will not only have the opportunity to see life beneath the surface\, but also to listen to underwater creatures too! Using hydrophone technology\, and a touch of magic\, Wild Intrigue will introduce you to the unexpected sounds of wetland life emerging at Racy Ghyll Farm\, bringing to life a whole new hidden world of animal acoustics. \n\n\n\nNo Wild Intrigue Mini Exped is complete without a delicious treat\, so locally sourced flapjacks* and drinks will be available to enjoy throughout. Why flapjacks? Well Frogs & Flapjacks was actually coined by American actor Nick Offerman when he visited Racy Ghyll in 2019… you know what\, it’s a long story\, come and join us and we’ll tell you all about it! \n\n\n\nThe purchase of each ticket contributes to the support of nature-friendly farming at Racy Ghyll Farm\, and in turn the wildlife this benefits in this corner of the Lake District National Park. \n\n\n\n*Please note that James and Helen Rebanks are understandably very busy people\, so they may not be available during this event. If we are very lucky\, Helen may be available to prepare the home-baked goodies for us. \n\n\n\nWhy not take a look at our other Mini Expeds taking place at Racy Ghyll Farm? Many share the same date\, so you could make a weekend of it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRacy Ghyll Farm is located only a short drive from Keswick or Penrith\, in the beautiful Matterdale Valley in the Lake District north of Ullswater. SUMMARY:Moths & Muffins - Racy Ghyll
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale\, James Rebanks\, his family and their Racy Ghyll Farm have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep\, but most recently James’ strong advocation of nature-friendly farming\, and his acclaimed books The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District and his recently published English Pastoral | An Inheritance. \n\n\n\nTraditional farming methods adopted at Racy Ghyll\, such as wildflower meadow restoration and altered grazing regimes\, benefit a diversity of moth species. The farm and its surrounding landscape offer an interesting mosaic of habitats which support a variety of beautiful moth species including Garden Tiger\, Beautiful Golden Y\, Poplar Hawkmoth and Green Carpet. \n\n\n\nThe morning will start with a fascinating insight into moths by Wild Intrigue\, accompanied by hot drinks and delicious muffins made locally\, before we had out to collect the moth traps. \n\n\n\nA kaleidoscope of colour awaits! Whilst your Wild Intrigue guides go through identifying and recording the species\, you will have the opportunity to take photographs of these under-appreciated night-pollinators. \n\n\n\nMoth trapping is vital for conservation. Many moths are are our nocturnal pollinators and have an important role in ecosystems\, so they are indicators of changes in the climate and habitats. Once captured and recorded all the moths are safely released back to the wild.  \n\n\n\nThe purchase of each ticket contributes to the support of nature-friendly farming at Racy Ghyll Farm\, and in turn the wildlife this benefits in this corner of the Lake District National Park. \n\n\n\nPlease note that James and Helen Rebanks are understandably very busy people\, so they may not be available during this event. Racy Ghyll supports a diversity of species\, from Common Pipistrelles which weigh as little as a 20 pence coin\, to Noctules which hawk through the woodland. If we are very lucky\, Helen may be able to prepare some home-baked goodies. The exact address and tailored directions will be provided upon booking.

SUMMARY:Bamff Beaver Expedition
DESCRIPTION:For 20 years Eurasian Beavers have been reshaping land\, wildlife\, water and minds on the Bamff Estate\, which supported the first beaver demonstration project in the UK.  \n\n\n\nNow\, Bamff Wildland supports over 40 beaver dams\, along with new pools\, channels and braids. These wonderful beaver wetlands\, along with naturally restored woodlands and new rewilding practices\, make this a landscape where birds\, mammals\, invertebrates\, plants – and people can thrive. \n\n\n\nThe brilliance of beavers lies more in what their bodies do\, as opposed to how they look…  \n\n\n\nChisel-like teeth and paddle-tails are just two fascinating anatomical features of beavers\, which make them first class architects and engineers\, much needed skills in their vocation of wetland creation. \n\n\n\nThe ultimate ‘Keystone Species’\, beavers create opportunities for a diversity and abundance of wetland wildlife to return\, under their long-evolved\, meticulous management.   \n\n\n\nLeaky beaver dams and expertly crafted channels help water to behave more naturally\, making beaver wetlands exciting\, ever-changing and fresh. Tree felling (coppicing) creates dynamic\, magnificently messy habitat along water edges\, creating safe buffers of shelter and food for nesting birds\, small mammals and amphibians; perfect places to tuck up and watch the experts at work too. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to truly understanding the benefits beavers can bring\, seeing really is believing. So join us to discover the beavers and abundant biodiversity of Bamff Wildland\, on this immersive Expedition. \n\n\n\nVisit the Bamff Beaver Expedition page to find out more.
