SUMMARY:Breakfast with Red Squirrels
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the arboreal life of the Red Squirrel\, in the mossy woodlands of RSPB Haweswater in the eastern Lake District National Park. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. For every Breakfast with Red Squirrels ticket sold\, you will be helping to support the conservation of Red Squirrels at this beautiful reserve. \n\n\n\nWe’ve recently teamed up with the local community pub\, The Mardale Inn\, to offer a discount on accommodation for our hide guests. Details will be provided upon booking.

SUMMARY:Community Workshop | Wild Ouseburn's Next Steps
DESCRIPTION:Help us design the future of Wild Ouseburn\n\n\n\nIn January 2024\, the Wild Ouseburn project was established by Wild Intrigue after years of exploring and sharing the vibrant wildlife of the Lower Ouseburn Valley. It quickly became clear that this part of Newcastle is full of life\, with both opportunities and challenges to protect and enhance this vital urban wildlife corridor. \n\n\n\nAs we connected with communities across the valley\, we discovered a special ingredient that makes this place truly remarkable – its people. The engagement of local residents in the Wild Ouseburn project’s first year has been heartwarming\, diverse\, and powerful. From dedicated wildlife surveys to species-focused studies\, the creation of local interest groups\, and pioneering work like Newcastle’s first urban Sand Martin bank\, the community has played a vital role. \n\n\n\nIf you share a passion for making the Lower Ouseburn Valley even wilder\, then you are part of the Wild Ouseburn community. As the project heads into the second year\, it is evolving to reflect the varied interests of the local area. To help plan the year ahead and determine the future direction of Wild Ouseburn\, we invite you to join us for a workshop on Sunday 9th March. \n\n\n\nDuring this session\, we will review some of the previous year’s wildlife data and observations\, and identify key areas of focus for 2025. If possible\, we encourage you to visit the Wild Ouseburn Exhibition at the BottleWorks in advance\, where some of the project’s findings will be presented. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop and continuing our rewilding journey for the Lower Ouseburn Valley. \n\n\n\nPart of the week-long Wild Ouseburn Celebration programme of events. Explore the full programme and find out more about the Wild Ouseburn project here. \n\nEverything you need to know\n\n📍TICKETS\n\nPlease RSVP so we have an idea of numbers. \n\n\n\n\n\n📅 WHEN + WHERE\n\nSunday 9th March | 7pm – 8pm(ish) \n\n\n\nHosted at 51 Lime Street\, NE1 2PQ. SUMMARY:Quayside Wildlife Safari
DESCRIPTION:Amongst the spectacular architecture of Newcastle\, incredible wildness can be found in our everyday explorations of the city. \n\n\n\nBetween Newcastle and Gateshead runs the tidal vein of the River Tyne. With its comings and goings between sea and land\, the scenery of the urban Quayside is ever-changing\, and so too is the wildlife which lives within and alongside it. \n\n\n\nOur Quayside is renowned as being home to the world’s most inland breeding colony of Black-legged Kittiwakes\, but also an incredible array of other\, perhaps surprising\, species. From familiar curb-side Feral Pigeons\, to awe-inspiring Peregrine Falcons\, which sit atop bridges\, viewing the city like magnificent gargoyles.  \n\n\n\nThe River Tyne was once a heavily polluted\, industrial river\, but now you can see Otters and Grey Seals feeding in the river\, Kittiwakes breeding on the stunning architecture and iconic Tyne Bridge\, Shelduck\, Teal\, and Redshank foraging amongst Dunston Staiths and a whole host of other species. \n\n\n\nJoin a Wild Intrigue guide for a journey along the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside\, to discover the wildlife that calls this city home. You’ll discover the history of the River Tyne\, and how its industrial past has shaped the wildlife that can now be found in the heart of this urban landscape. \n\n\n\nThis walking tour will be approximately 5 miles long\, following footpaths along the River Tyne. We’ll stop for lunch along the banks of the river to enjoy a delicious packed lunch from local social enterprise\, Big River Bakery.

SUMMARY:Beaver Enclosure Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEAVER ENCLOSURE\n\n\n\nIn partnership with National Trust Wallington\, we are thrilled to host Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, showcasing the remarkable architectural and engineering achievements of these dynamic mammals\, which were introduced to the estate in July 2023. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue guides will share their knowledge and firsthand experience as beaver ecologists whilst you explore this dynamic wetland habitat. This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back in the landscape\, thriving freshwater life – from wetland birds and fish\, to unexpected surprises like insects feeding on sugar-rich sap – offers different encounters on every safari. \n\n\n\nWhile the nocturnal beavers themselves are highly unlikely to be seen on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, the magic lies in seeing and understanding their incredible ecosystem engineering. Our Dusk Beaver Safaris will return in early Summer 2025 to watch the beavers and experience the tranquility of their wetland habitat – find out more here. \n\n\n\nOur Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington are among the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, as you witness the profound impact this keystone species has on the surrounding plants\, animals\, and even the behaviour of water itself. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, quickly adapting to changes in water flow\, food availability\, and family dynamics. This means each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, with flexible itineraries to accommodate the busy beavers and abundant other wildlife. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue had previously undertaken community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland. We are thrilled to now to share our expertise and insights from Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nIn the summer of 2024\, Wild Intrigue hosted 50 immersive beaver experiences at the Wallington Beaver Enclosure. We’re excited to continue sharing the evolving landscape and seasonal changes of the Wallington beaver wetland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE\n\n\n\n– The beaver enclosure features rugged\, uneven terrain\, including some hilly areas that guests must navigate. The walking safari moves at a leisurely pace\, allowing guests to fully experience the diverse wetland environment. If you have any questions about accessibility within the enclosure\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. \n\n\n\n– The Beaver Enclosure is not located in the main NT Wallington visitor hub\, as detailed on the map. It is approximately a 10 minute drive north. The exact meeting point with directions will be shared upon booking. \n\n\n\n– Pre-booking is essential. Beaver Enclosure Safaris are only suitable for ages 16+. \n\n\n\n– Ticket holders can enjoy complimentary same-day access to the National Trust Wallington estate! \n\n\n\nFor more information please visit the main Mini-Exped page. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321ha estate.

SUMMARY:City Stadium Wildflower Meadow Creation
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to create a new wildflower meadow! \n\n\n\nFollowing from our Urban Rewilding session at the (soon-to-be) City Stadium meadow on Saturday 22nd March\, we are hosting more opportunities for you to come along and take part! \n\n\n\nTasks will be practical\, including rolling and moving turf (with wheelbarrows) to create habitat piles. Everyone is welcome! Wear clothes and boots you don’t mind getting muddy\, and bring a drink with you. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in soil invertebrates\, this is also a brilliant chance to come along and help record the species here for the Wild Ouseburn project! Worms\, beetles and centipedes are just some of the creatures we’ve discovered\, amongst some intriguing larvae… \n\n\n\nYou’re welcome to stay for the whole time\, or just a little. Every minute you can spare is a huge help to create this wildflower meadow. \n\nNo need to RSVP\, just turn up! If you have questions\, please feel welcome to contact us at wildouseburn@wildintirgue.co.uk \n\n\n\nDATES + TIMES \n\n\n\nSunday 23rd March \n\n2.30pm – 4.30pm (turf rolling only) \n\n\n\nMonday 24th March \n\n9am – 12pm + 4.30pm – 6pm \n\n\n\nTuesday 25th March \n\n10am – 5pm \n\n\n\nWednesday 26th March \n\n9am – Finish \n\n\n\nMEETING LOCATION \n\n\n\nMeet us at the (soon-to-be!) wildflower meadow \n\nwhat3words: https://what3words.com/little.round.cakes \n\n\n\nHOW DID IT BEGIN? \n\n\n\nIn 2024 during a Wild Ouseburn Sunset Bat Survey\, Common Pipistrelle bats were recorded feeding over a section of grassland near Warwick Street\, which was part of Urban Green’s ‘Let it Grow’ campaign. This was the first time bats had been recorded feeding over this part of the City Stadium during surveys! \n\n\n\nWildflower meadows and grasslands rich in biodiversity are an incredibly important habitats\, but are increasingly rare in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. Their plants provide nectar for pollinators\, attracting insects for Sand Martins\, Swifts and bats\, and the long vegetation offers shelter for small mammals – and a hunting ground for Ouseburn’s Kestrels. \n\n\n\nYou can read a report on Ouseburn’s Butterflies by Mike Jeffries to explore how vital these habitats are here. \n\n\n\nWorking with Newcastle City Council and the Ouseburn Trust\, the Wild Ouseburn project has been given the opportunity to restore some of this grassland habitat\, to create new wildflower-rich meadows on part of the City Stadium for nature and people to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThis wildflower meadow creation has been funded by Wild Intrigue\, and supported by Newcastle City Council\, Ouseburn Trust and Newcastle Nature Networks.

SUMMARY:City Stadium Wildflower Meadow Seeding
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to seed a new wildflower meadow at City Stadium!\n\n\n\nIn 2024 during a Wild Ouseburn Sunset Bat Survey\, Common Pipistrelle bats were recorded feeding over a section of grassland near Warwick Street\, which was part of Urban Green’s ‘Let it Grow’ campaign. \n\n\n\nJoin us to seed this new wildflower meadow and be part of it’s colourful future! \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome! Just bring a water bottle\, a coat if it’s wet and shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy. \n\n\n\nSaturday 29th March | 1pm – 3pm \n\nMeet at the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn for a 1pm start. \n\nwhat3words:https://w3w.co/ruby.petal.rushed \n\n\n\nThis wildflower meadow creation has been funded by Wild Intrigue\, and supported by Newcastle City Council\, Ouseburn Trust and Newcastle Nature Networks.
