Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. From familiar curb-side Feral Pigeons\, to awe-inspiring Peregrine Falcons\, which sit atop bridges\, viewing the city like magnificent gargoyles.  \n\n\n\nThe River Tyne was once a heavily polluted\, industrial river\, but now you can see Otters and Grey Seals feeding in the river\, Kittiwakes breeding on the stunning architecture and iconic Tyne Bridge\, Shelduck\, Teal\, and Redshank foraging amongst Dunston Staiths and a whole host of other species. \n\n\n\nJoin a Wild Intrigue guide for a journey along the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside\, to discover the wildlife that calls this city home. SUMMARY:Nest Box Record Scheme Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Wild Ouseburn project\, a Nest Box Scheme has been setup across the area\, with 16 bird boxes installed to date!  \n\n\n\nThese Bird Boxes provide nesting habitat for a range of hole nesting species from Blue Tits and Great Tits\, to House Sparrows and Starlings. Nesting habitat for hole nesting species are significantly reduced in urban areas as trees are often not mature\, and many holes in our buildings are required\, preventing birds nesting opportunity. \n\n\n\nWe need your help to monitor the boxes! \n\n\n\nThe new boxes will provide a vital nest site for many species\, but we need to monitor and record their success (or failures). To do this we have established a Nest Box Recording project as part of the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Nest Record Scheme. \n\n\n\nBy following the progress of individual boxes (and nests)\, we can collect vital data on the breeding success of the birds in the Lower Ouseburn Valley\, helping inform future management and rewilding\, our findings will also feed into the BTO’s national data. \n\n\n\nThis training session will focus on developing the skills required for completing the Nest Record Scheme survey using an endoscope camera (in small groups)\, which will take place during the Spring. No prior experience is needed\, all equipment will be provided. \n\n\n\nNo booking required just meet at the Cumberland Arms for 2:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informal evening to watch the Ring-Necked Parakeets (Psittacula krameria) heading to roost over Ballast Hills!\n\n\n\nA species native to South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa\, the origins of Ring-Necked Parakeets in the UK is one of rumour and myth\, some say Jimi Hendrix released them in London in the 60s\, others that they escaped from the set of The Africa Queen 1951! \n\n\n\nRinged-Necked Parakeets have now colonised many parts of Europe\, and the UK (particularly in London). In Newcastle we have a small\, but growing population\, of about 300 birds\, in the winter months they roost communally. You can find out more about them in Phil’s blog. \n\n\n\nBallast Hills is a perfect place to spot these noisy parrots heading to their winter roost in Walker Park. SUMMARY:Wild Ouseburn Bird Count - Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to help survey the birds of Wild Ouseburn with the Merlin Bird ID App!\n\n\n\nThe Wild Ouseburn project aims to survey as much of the wildlife in the area as possible\, documenting wildlife records that can help conserve and restore the species in the valley\, by informing future management and identifying opportunities for rewilding. \n\n\n\nBy surveying the birds with set methods we can compare records year after year\, creating robust data to monitor the Lower Ouseburn Valley’s birds into the future. \n\n\n\nThe Wild Ouseburn Bird Count will use a survey technique called ‘Point Counts’\, a pre-defined spot where you record the birds over 10 minutes. For this survey we’ll be using the Merlin Bird ID App\, which can recognise and identify the birds you hear! \n\n\n\nThis training workshop will cover all the survey techniques for the Wild Ouseburn Bird Count\, including setting up the Merlin Bird ID App. \n\n\n\nNo prior experience needed\, just a phone capable of downloading the Merlin Bird ID App (we’re currently looking at the possibility of having some tablets for survey use). \n\n\n\nNo booking required\, just meet at Ouseburn Farm for 10am.

SUMMARY:Wetland Bird Survey - Breeding Birds Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Over the next year the Wild Ouseburn project will be developing a series of surveys across the project area. The surveys will follow seasonal changes of species and follow existing methodologies. The results gathered will help build a better picture of the wildlife in the area\, enabling us to better conserve and enhance habitats and species\, boosting the vibrant biodiversity of Wild Ouseburn! \n\n\n\nThe Wetlands Bird Survey has been underway for three weeks now\, with the Spring breeding season now upon us it’s time to record some extra data. This training workshop will be a top-up session for existing surveyors\, to identify the signs of breeding behaviour\, and how to record broods of young birds.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet outside the Cycle Hub for 10am\, new survey sheets will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to start getting involved in wildlife surveying through Wild Ouseburn\, or are intrigued and would like to simply find out more you can get in touch with us here. \n\n\n\nPlease note that you do not need to have prior knowledge of birds to take part in these surveys. \n\n\n\nCan’t make the workshop dates? SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Water Quality in the Ouseburn - Challenges and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Dr David Werner to discuss his work in exploring the health of our blue corridor\, the Ouseburn. Part of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust.  \n\n\n\nThis event if free and open for all to attend as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. Book your free ticket in the link opposite. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK \n\n\n\nThe Reece Foundation commissioned Newcastle University to undertake an analysis of water quality in the Ouseburn as it was concerned that pollution was having a detrimental effect on the Ouseburn valley as a healthy green space for people and wildlife.  \n\n\n\nOur investigation confirmed that water quality in Jesmond Dene and the Ouseburn Valley is inadequate for a well-used urban green space. Innovative methods using environmental DNA showed that water quality is changeable and depending on the weather conditions. During one September storm event 72-77% of all bacteria in the Ouseburn originate from the sewer system. A partnership comprising the Reece Foundation\, Newcastle University\, Northumbrian Water\, Newcastle City Council\, Urban Green\, the Environment Agency and other key stakeholders has now been established to restore the Ouseburn back to a healthy state. All stakeholders are welcome to join this endeavour. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n\n\n\nDr David Werner is Professor of Environmental Systems Modelling at Newcastle University. His research group is developing innovative methods to rapidly survey\, map\, and communicate waterborne hazards. This includes the development of an innovative suitcase laboratory for molecular microbiology\, and the use of environmental DNA for faecal pollution source attribution and quantitative microbial risk assessment. SUMMARY:Wetland Bird Survey - Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Ouseburn project needs your help!\n\n\n\nOver the next year the Wild Ouseburn project will be developing a series of surveys across the project area. The surveys will follow seasonal changes of species and follow existing methodologies. The results gathered will help build a better picture of the wildlife in the area\, enabling us to better conserve and enhance habitats and species\, boosting the vibrant biodiversity of Wild Ouseburn! \n\n\n\nThe first survey will be the Wetlands Bird Survey\, which will feature two survey routes across the project area following the important blue corridors. One survey route will follow the Ouseburn from its mouth at the Tyne and along to the culvert at Ouseburn Farm. The other route will follow the north bank of the Tyne from Spiller’s Wharf to the Millennium Bridge. \n\n\n\nThe survey will primarily focus on wetland birds\, from Mallards to Mute Swans\, alongside visual water quality checks. The survey will take place fortnightly\, counting the species present\, recording behaviour and breeding success alongside identifying important feeding and roosting areas\, to build a full picture of the birds that use this important wildlife corridor. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to start getting involved in wildlife surveying through Wild Ouseburn\, or are intrigued and would like to simply find out more\, join us for a morning training session on Friday 2nd February or Sunday 11th February 9am – 1030am. Meet outside of the Cycle Hub\, Spiller’s Wharf (no booking required). \n\n\n\nThis is a great chance to begin your bird identification journey (as there are only a handful of species which regularly use the Ouseburn!)\, as well as learning ecological monitoring methods. The Wild Ouseburn project will provide everything you need\, including Opticron binoculars\, to identification and recording sheets. DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the arboreal life of the Red Squirrel\, in the mossy woodlands of RSPB Haweswater in the eastern Lake District National Park. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. SUMMARY:Wild Ouseburn Wander - St Ann's
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of Ouseburn’s wild side and a casual catch up about the Wild Ouseburn project.  \n\n\n\nEach Wild Ouseburn Wander will take in different wild species and spaces\, and will be an opportunity to share ideas with like-minded people. Along the way we will record the wildlife spotted along the way\, helping to better understand how to protect and enhance our local wildlife.  \n\n\n\nThis route will explore the St Ann’s Church grounds and parts of the St Ann’s green spaces\, before heading onto Lime Street and into the Ouseburn Woods. \n\n\n\nNo need to book a spot\, just come along! Meet outside the St Ann’s Church gates on Breamish Street on Saturday 3rd February for a start 12pm start. Binoculars will be available to use.
