SUMMARY:City Stadium wildflower meadow creation
DESCRIPTION:The City Stadium Wildflower Meadow 🌼 \n\n\n\nIn spring 2025\, a lovely new wildflower meadow was created by the Wild Ouseburn project at the City Stadium in Shieldfield\, Newcastle. This was following a Bat Survey which showed Common Pipistrelles feeding in the area for the very first time\, thanks to a “Let it Grow” campaign by Urban Green (now Newcastle Parks & Allotments). \n\n\n\nSpecies-rich grasslands and meadows have declined in the Lower Ouseburn Valley\, something which has occured throughout Britain\, causing drastic declines in the abundance and diversity of wildlife – in particular pollinators such as butterflies\, bees and moths. \n\n\n\nBy understanding natural processes\, we can rewild our cities – boosting the urban landscape for wildlife as well as people. \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to work on the City Stadium meadows in partnership with Newcastle Parks & Allotments. \n\n\n\nImage: Birds-eye view of the City Stadium wildflower meadow\, with paths running throughout\, created in Spring 2025. The bottom section is one area that will be worked on in October which you can help with! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we’ll be doing\n\n\n\nThere’ll be plenty for everyone to get involved with! Tasks will include: \n\n\n\nRolling and moving turf in wheelbarrows\n\nCreating habitat piles\n\nRaking\n\n\n\nAlongside other tasks such as \n\n\n\nLitter picking\n\nSoil invertebrate recording and ID (such as worms and beetles uncovered by turf removal)\n\n\n\nThis is part of the Wild Ouseburn project\, and you’ll be inducted in safely using suitable tools for the tasks. \n\n\n\nImage: Wild Ouseburn volunteers helping with meadow creation in Spring. \n\n\n\n\n\nI \n\n\n\nLOCATION \n\nWe’ll be working on sections in the northern part of City Stadium. \n\n\n\nWhat3Words for the general location: sling.herbs.clouds \n\n\n\nThere’s no need to let us know you’re coming – just look for someone in a high-vis vest! \n\n\n\nDATES + TIME \n\nThere’ll be a few sessions throughout October – you’re welcome to come to as many as you like\, or just take part for a short while one day! Every minute you can spare is hugely helpful and will help to boost our local wildlife – and make the City Stadium look beautiful! \n\n\n\nYou will be able to find us at the City Stadium between 10am and 3pm (unless otherwise stated) on the following dates in October. \n\n\n\nOctober 2025 dates \n\n\n\nSunday 12th \n\nMonday 13th \n\nTuesday 14th \n\nFriday 17th \n\nSaturday 18th (1.30pm – 5.30pm) \n\nSunday 19th (10am – 5.30pm) \n\nMonday 20th (10am – 5.30pm) \n\nTuesday 21st (10m – 5.30pm) \n\nThursday 23rd \n\nFriday 24th \n\nSaturday 25th \n\n\n\nYou can also join us for our special Wildflower Seed Sowing day on Sunday 26th October\, 11am to 1pm! \n\n\n\nHOW TO TAKE PART \n\nThere’s no need to let us know you’re coming\, just turn up on the day! You don’t need any experience\, and everyone is welcome. The more the merrier! \n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll equipment for the tasks as well as gloves will be provided. \n\n\n\nBe sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy! We’d recommend trousers and a thick coat\, along with comfy walking shoes/ boots. Bring plenty to drink and some lunch/ snacks. SUMMARY:Urban Rewilding Sessions - Large Herbivore Day
DESCRIPTION:Our Lost Large Herbivores + Scrub 🦬\n\nOur plants and trees evolved alongside large herbivores like Bison\, Boar\, Beavers\, Elk and Aurochs – and have developed ways to cope with the pressures of living alongside such heavy-hooved\, hungry creatures. \n\n\n\nFor example\, Bramble and Hawthorn have sharp thorns to make sure they don’t get munched too much\, and Willow produce fresh shoots quickly to compensate for not having such defences. \n\n\n\nIn Britain\, whilst some species such as the Beaver are making a slow recovery from extinction\, we have largely lost this important natural process – particularly in cities. \n\n\n\nHowever our ecosystems still need this natural “disturbance” to grow and flourish. This is where YOU come in \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we’ll be doing\n\nWhile it would be pretty exciting to see Bison and Boar roaming around City Stadium\, we’ll instead be taking on the role of these lost herbivores and replicating the natural relationship which has evolved between them and our ecosystems. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be focussing on managing understorey species like Bramble and Hawthorn – to do this we’ll be using tools such as shears to “nibble” or “browse” in a naturalistic way. You might be surprised just how easy (and fun!) it is to get into the mind of a nibbling Bison\, a stomping Auroch or a rootling Boar. \n\n\n\nInstead of managing our greenspaces in a human-centred way\, if we understand how our ecosystems function\, we can also boost urban greenspaces for biodiversity. \n\n\n\nWe call this Urban Rewilding – by replicating lost natural processes\, we can help our urban landscapes reach their maximum potential for wildlife – and have a lush day out in nature! \n\n\n\nWe’re pleased to be undertaking this approach in partnership with the Newcastle Parks & Allotments Team and the Ouseburn Trust’s Saturday volunteer sessions. \n\n\n\nLOCATION FOR WILD OUSEBURN SESSION \n\nMeet at 9.50am by the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn\, Stepney Bank\, Ouseburn\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PW. \n\n\n\nThe What3Words for the meeting location is: brick.repair.frogs \n\n\n\nFrom there we’ll walk to the City Stadium. \n\n\n\nDATE + TIME \n\nSaturday 25th October. \n\nThe session runs from 10am to 12pm. Please meet at the shipping container around 10 minutes before the start time. \n\n\n\nHOW TO TAKE PART \n\nJust turn up on the day! You don’t need any prior experience\, and everyone is welcome. \n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll equipment and gloves will be provided. Please wear suitable\, sturdy walking shoes/ boots (AKA ‘hooves’) as we might venture we off footpaths. Be sure to wear suitable clothing\, we will be going ahead rain or shine! We’d recommend bringing a drink and some snacks. In the case of a severe weather warning the session may be cancelled\, in which case we’ll update this event page. \n\n\n\nPart of a collection of Large Herbivore events across Newcastle + Gateshead.

SUMMARY:City Stadium Wildflower Meadow Seeding
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to seed new wildflower meadows at City Stadium!\n\n\n\nAfter the success of last year’s wildflower meadow at City Stadium\, it’s now time to sow the seeds of the new wildflower meadow areas that we’ve been creating over the last few weeks. \n\n\n\nWhat was once 4000 squared metres of mowed amenity grassland is now ready to transform into a beautiful bloom of colour\, to support wildlife in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. From bats and birds\, to butterflies and bees\, the City Stadium meadows will provide new areas for wildlife to live and feed\, as well as a spectacular display of life and colour for us all to enjoy. \n\n\n\nBe part of this transformation\, and join us on Sunday 26th October to help us spread the wildflower seeds. Ouseburn Folk Choir will be serenading our seed spreading\, and there will be a chance to take a packet of wildflower seeds home too! \n\n\n\nThe City Stadium wildflower meadows have been created as part of Wild Ouseburn\, to rewild the Lower Ouseburn Valley. Hundreds of people have generously volunteered their time in the creation of the meadows. \n\n\n\nThe work is in partnership with the Newcastle Parks & Allotments team\, and has received funding support through the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way Fund and Newcastle Nature Networks. \n\n\n\nSunday 26th October 2025 | 11am – 1pm \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome! If you’re thinking of coming along\, let us know with RSVP\, and we’ll send a reminder to you a couple of days before. You don’t need to RSVP to come – it just helps us have an idea of numbers! \n\n\n\nMeet at the original City Stadium wildflower meadow\, created in spring this year (next to the Cycle Path where the coffee van usually is). \n\nwhat3words: what3words.com/sling.herbs.clouds

SUMMARY:Beaver Enclosure Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEAVER ENCLOSURE\n\n\n\nIn partnership with National Trust Wallington\, we are thrilled to host Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, showcasing the remarkable architectural and engineering achievements of these dynamic mammals\, which were introduced to the estate in July 2023. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue guides will share their knowledge and firsthand experience as beaver ecologists whilst you explore this dynamic wetland habitat. This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back in the landscape\, thriving freshwater life – from wetland birds and fish\, to unexpected surprises like insects feeding on sugar-rich sap – offers different encounters on every safari. \n\n\n\nWhile the nocturnal beavers themselves are highly unlikely to be seen on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, the magic lies in seeing and understanding their incredible ecosystem engineering. Our Dusk Beaver Safaris will return in early Summer 2026 to watch the beavers and experience the tranquility of their wetland habitat – find out more here. \n\n\n\nOur Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington are among the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, as you witness the profound impact this keystone species has on the surrounding plants\, animals\, and even the behaviour of water itself. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, quickly adapting to changes in water flow\, food availability\, and family dynamics. This means each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, with flexible itineraries to accommodate the busy beavers and abundant other wildlife. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue had previously undertaken community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland. We are thrilled to now to share our expertise and insights from Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nTo date we have hosted over 100 immersive beaver experiences in the Wallington Beaver Enclosure\, and are excited to continue sharing the evolving landscape and seasonal changes of the Wallington beaver wetland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE\n\n\n\n– The beaver enclosure features rugged\, uneven terrain\, including some hilly areas that guests must navigate. The walking safari moves at a leisurely pace\, allowing guests to fully experience the diverse wetland environment. If you have any questions about accessibility within the enclosure\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. \n\n\n\n– The Beaver Enclosure is not located in the main NT Wallington visitor hub\, as detailed on the map. It is approximately a 10 minute drive north. The exact meeting point with directions will be shared upon booking. \n\n\n\n– Pre-booking is essential. Beaver Enclosure Safaris are only suitable for ages 16+. \n\n\n\n– Ticket holders can enjoy complimentary same-day access to the National Trust Wallington estate! \n\n\n\nFor more information please visit the main Mini-Exped page. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321ha estate.

SUMMARY:Scrub Planting at City Stadium
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to rewild the City Stadium. We’ll be planting scrub and spring bulbs to help make the park more biodiverse. \n\n\n\nScrub\, and its edges\, are one of the most important habitats for wildlife. Young thorny trees and brambles begin the process of change from a grassland to woodland. In areas of scrub\, you can find a whole range of different habitats (known as ‘mosaics’) with grassland\, young thorny trees\, and woodland all being present at different stages and times. These dynamic habitats means that they become incredibly valuable place for wildlife\, providing different niches for a large number of species. \n\n\n\nIn the urban landscape\, especially our parks\, scrub is often one of the first habitats to be lost\, or prevented from growing. In Wild Ouseburn we’re also seeing loss of scrub through development pressures. Through our bird territory mapping surveys\, we have identified opportunities to plant new scrub in the City Stadium to support breeding birds\, but also a wide range of other species. The scrub planting will complement this year’s wildflower meadow creation to create a more biodiverse landscape\, and reinstate some of the scrub lost to a neighbouring development.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll be planting thorny and understory tree species including; Hazel\, Blackthorn\, Crab Apple\, Elder\, Dog Rose and Rowan which have been provided by Woodland Trust as part of their Community Tree Packs. Alongside this\, we’ll also be planting spring bulbs in the shadier woodland edges which have been provided by Newcastle City Council\, to help support early emerging pollinators. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to take part\, you don’t need any experience – we’ll show you what to do – and we’ll have gloves and some spades available to use. If you’ve got a spare spade please bring it along with you! \n\n\n\nMeet by the original City Stadium Meadow ///poet.rice.brief \n\n\n\nThe City Stadium rewilding is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in partnership with Newcastle City Council\, and has been funded though the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way Fund. \n\n\n\nSaturday 22nd November marks the start of National Tree Week\, this year celebrates its 50th year! Find out more about National Tree Week here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease RSVP your free place(s) so we have an idea of numbers\, and you’ll be sent a handy reminder email a couple of days before the event.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Wild Finca
DESCRIPTION:As a Christmas treat\, we’re so excited to invite you for an evening immersed in the inspirational landscape of Wild Finca. Tuning in all the way from Northern Spain\, Luke and Katie will join us to host a virtual talk\, with the chance for a discussion and Q&A at the end. This year’s talk series is supported by the the Reece Foundation’s Ouse Burn Way fund. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK + SPEAKER\n\n\n\nWhen wildlife photographer Luke Massey and his partner\, writer Katie Stacey\, first discovered a derelict dairy farm in the mountains of northern Spain\, they had no idea it would become the centre of a long-term rewilding project – and the place where they would build a home and raise their two sons. \n\n\n\nNow seven years into the Wild Finca journey\, Luke shares how they have transformed an abandoned\, overgrazed landscape into a thriving mosaic of meadows\, woodlands and wetlands. He recounts encounters with wolves\, bears and countless other species\, alongside the daily\, grounded work of restoring soil\, water and habitat while raising a young family in the heart of a rewilding landscape. \n\n\n\nFrom boosting biodiversity and creating new habitats\, to turning a once-exhausted farm into an oasis for wildlife and documenting rare species through camera traps\, Luke offers an honest\, hopeful look at what becomes possible when you choose to live with – rather than against – the wild. \n\n\n\nFor those who’d like to dive deeper into the story behind Wild Finca – the land\, the wildlife\, and the family shaping their lives around it – Katie’s book No Paradise With Wolves is now available wherever you get your books.
