SUMMARY:Breakfast with Red Squirrels
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the arboreal life of the Red Squirrel\, in the mossy woodlands of RSPB Haweswater in the eastern Lake District National Park. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. For every Breakfast with Red Squirrels ticket sold\, you will be helping to support the conservation of Red Squirrels at this beautiful reserve.

SUMMARY:Frogs & Flapjacks - Racy Ghyll
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the Lakeland valley of Matterdale\, James Rebanks\, his family\, and their Racy Ghyll Farm have gained admiration and respect for their Herdwick Sheep\, but most recently James’ strong advocation of nature-friendly farming\, and his acclaimed book The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District\, and recently published English Pastoral | An Inheritance. \n\n\n\nThis Mini Exped explores life emerging below and above the surface of newly created wetlands at Racy Ghyll Farm. At each stage of life within a wetland\, drama unfolds! From minute dragonfly larve and water beetles prowling for prey\, to grey herons and badgers searching for abundant amphibians. \n\n\n\nEmbark upon an underwater safari with a difference with Wild Intrigue\, but leave those wetsuits at home! There’ll be no need to jump in\, as specialist equipment designed to spy on creatures beneath the surface will be available\, including pond survey nets\, to humanely capture freshwater invertebrates and discover their brilliant and bizarre ecology. \n\n\n\nYou will not only have the opportunity to see life beneath the surface\, but also to listen to underwater creatures too! Using hydrophone technology\, and a touch of magic\, Wild Intrigue will introduce you to the unexpected sounds of wetland life emerging at Racy Ghyll Farm\, bringing to life a whole new hidden world of animal acoustics. \n\n\n\nNo Wild Intrigue Mini Exped is complete without a delicious treat\, so locally sourced flapjacks* and drinks will be available to enjoy throughout. Why flapjacks? Well Frogs & Flapjacks was actually coined by American actor Nick Offerman when he visited Racy Ghyll in 2019… you know what\, it’s a long story\, come and join us and we’ll tell you all about it! \n\n\n\nThe purchase of each ticket contributes to the support of nature-friendly farming at Racy Ghyll Farm\, and in turn the wildlife this benefits in this corner of the Lake District National Park. \n\n\n\n*Please note that James and Helen Rebanks are understandably very busy people\, so they may not be available during this event. If we are very lucky\, Helen may be available to prepare the home-baked goodies for us. \n\n\n\nWhy not take a look at our other Mini Expeds taking place at Racy Ghyll Farm? Many share the same date\, so you could make a weekend of it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRacy Ghyll Farm is located only a short drive from Keswick or Penrith\, in the beautiful Matterdale Valley in the Lake District north of Ullswater. The exact address and tailored directions will be provided upon booking.
