SUMMARY:Dusk Beaver Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE THE TRANQUILITY OF A BEAVER WETLAND\n\n\n\nAs the sun sets\, an intriguing creature missing from the Northumbrian landscape for 400 years\, emerges into its restored watery home. \n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue on a Dusk Beaver Safari at the National Trust Wallington beaver enclosure\, to observe the first beavers to have been restored in Northumberland. \n\n\n\nThe Wallington Beavers live in an ever-changing wetland crafted by their own engineering. As aquatic mammals\, beavers need a safe\, watery environment in which to live and raise their young\, which the Wallington Beavers have developed through the ongoing creation of dams.  \n\n\n\nThe phrase “Busy as a Beaver” comes to life when watching these industrious animals. Responding to the behaviour of water each night\, Beavers adapt dams\, dig channels\, and undertake essential maintenance. \n\n\n\nWetland engineering is hungry work\, and any respectable builder enjoys plenty of breaks to socialise. So amongst the hard work\, beavers spend a good amount of time feeding and spending time with their family members. \n\n\n\nThe banks of the burn are carpeted in colourful wildflowers and grasses\, along with regenerated trees such as willow\, which the Beavers forage on throughout the night. \n\n\n\nWith strong social bonds\, family members make time to groom\, play and communicate with one another. Observing these social mammals\, in the wetlands they have carefully crafted\, is one of the most enriching wildlife encounters you can enjoy. We are delighted that this is now possible in Northumberland thanks to the National Trust\, with support from the Reece Foundation and the Beaver Trust. \n\n\n\nFrom a raised position in the landscape\, you will enjoy views of the core beaver wetland amongst a bank of wildflowers. The wetland is home to an array of other species\, including Roe Deer\, Grey Heron\, Badgers and Otter – which may also make a special appearance. \n\n\n\nDusk Beaver Safaris will follow the Beaver Trust’s ethical beaver watching protocol\, in addition to Wild Intrigue’s 10 years of experience watching and sharing this spectacular species.  \n\n\n\nAlthough every effort has been made to share a successful encounter with the Beavers\, please understand that these are wild animals and views therefore cannot be guaranteed. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this experience is strictly adults (18+) only\, and once entered into the beaver enclosure\, attendees will be required to speak quietly.

SUMMARY:Beaver Enclosure Safari
DESCRIPTION:EXPLORE NORTHUMBERLAND’S BEAVER ENCLOSURE\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to partner with the National Trust to offer a brand-new Beaver Enclosure Safari for 2024\, to share the incredible architecture and engineering developed by this beaver family. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue guides will share knowledge and experience as beaver ecologists while you explore this dynamic wetland habitat\, offering you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the ecology and intrigue of beavers in this beautiful corner of Northumberland. \n\n\n\nYou will see and learn about a range of beaver activities such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, fresh coppice shoots\, masterfully dug channels and the beavers’ famous dams. Beaver features such as these are complex and ever-changing\, making beaver wetlands one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back\, freshwater life such as dragonflies\, waterfowl and amphibians thrive – alongside many unexpected surprises\, such as butterflies feeding on sugar-rich sap on gnawed trees. \n\n\n\nBeavers are nocturnal mammals\, so viewing the animals themselves is highly unlikely on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, however the magic of this species lies in their incredible ecosystem engineering. We are hosting a small number of Dusk Beaver Safaris in Summer 2024 to watch the Beavers and enjoy the tranquility of the Beaver wetland\, find out more here. \n\n\n\nThis dynamism makes our Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, to witness the impacts this Keystone Species can have on other plants\, animals and even the behaviour of water. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, and respond quickly to changes in waterflow\, food availability and family relationships. This means that each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, and itineraries will be flexible to accommodate busy beaver activities\, as well as the array of other wildlife in the area. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue has led community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland\, and has shared intrigue and knowledge of beavers through guided beaver experiences\, talks and events. We are delighted to now have the opportunity to share insights from our experience in Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nFor more information please visit the main Mini-Exped page. \n\n\n\nThe reintroduction of beavers at Wallington forms a vital part of the National Trust’s ambition for Wilder Wallington\, to restore native species and natural ecosystem functions across the vast 5321ha estate.

However these creatures have fascinating nocturnal adaptations waiting to be discovered\, and are incredibly important indicators of the health of our urban environments. \n\n\n\nThe ways in which bats and hedgehogs move through and use the Wild Ouseburn project area are little-understood – and in such cases\, we can make changes without properly understanding the impact we’re having on these declining mammal populations. \n\n\n\nBoth rely upon darkness away from urban lighting\, habitat connectivity and food availability\, so to understand how we can protect and improve these natural features\, we need to first identify where bats and hedgehogs are currently active. \n\n\n\nOur Bat and Hedgehog Surveys will involve meeting at set points to survey bat activity acoustically (with bat detectors) and search for hedgehogs and their signs. All information will be recorded on a map\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nJoin us on our Bat and Hedgehog Surveys to help us discover where these animals are active\, and: \n\n\n\nLearn about Bat and Hedgehog ecology\n\nBe introduced to Bat survey methodology\n\nLearn how to use a Magenta 4 bat detector \n\nLearn different ways to survey Hedgehogs\n\n\n\nSurveys will take part in different locations within the Wild Ouseburn project area\, and at different times according to the sunset. Please look at Dates and Locations section for the meeting points and start times of each event.  \n\n\n\nYou are welcome to attend one or all surveys and\, if you are interested\, will have the opportunity to volunteer to take on areas to continue and expand these important surveys. Everyone is welcome\, no prior experience or knowledge of bats or hedgehogs is needed. Please note that most routes include steps. \n\n\n\nThis is the start of longer-term Wild Ouseburn surveys and studies on our urban bats and hedgehogs\, and more opportunities will be developed to contribute to surveying and protecting these mammals. \n\nSURVEY DATES & LOCATIONS\n\n\n\nWednesday 26th June | 21:30 – 22:45 \n\nOuseburn Woods (meet outside Ouseburn Farm entrance) \n\n\n\nFriday 5th July | 21:30 – 22:45 \n\nBallast Hill and St Lawrence (meet by bench at Ballast Hill) \n\n\n\nTuesday 9th July | CANCELLED due to weather \n\nShieldfield \n\n\n\nThursday 18th July | 21:20 -22:35 \n\nSt Ann’s and Lime Street (meet on Lime Street\, at bottom of Steps to Nowhere) \n\n\n\nFriday 2nd August | 21:00 – 22:15 \n\nOuseburn Woods (meet outside Ouseburn Farm entrance) \n\n\n\nThursday 8th August | 21:00 – 22:15 \n\nShieldfield (meet outside Big River Bakery) \n\n\n\nThursday 15th August | 20:30 – 21:45 \n\nBallast Hill and St Lawrence (meet by bench at Ballast Hill) \n\n\n\nTuesday 27th August | 20:00 – 21:15 \n\nSt Ann’s and Lime Street  (meet on Lime Street\, at bottom of Steps to Nowhere)

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Protecting and Restoring Nature: a local government ecologist’s perspective
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Peter Shield\, Senior Ecologist with Gateshead Council\, to hear his perspective of opportunities for nature restoration in the urban landscape. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nThe River Tyne physically divides the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead\, but in ecological terms\, it serves as a vital connection for urban wildlife navigating between the two.  \n\n\n\nOuseburn’s tidal waters and expansive green corridor intertwine the landscapes and ecosystems of these neighbouring cities. Kestrels\, for instance\, maintain territories across the urban divide\, hunting freely between grasslands. Butterflies flit between patches of nectar-rich wildflowers\, while otters swim between river catchments and pollen drifts between the cities. \n\n\n\nThough a “landscape-scale approach” to nature conservation is more commonly discussed in rural contexts\, this holistic perspective must also guide efforts to protect and restore our urban environments. \n\n\n\nTo kick off the third Wild Ouseburn Talks series\, we are delighted to welcome Peter Shield from Gateshead Council’s Natural Environment Team. From developing policies and plans\, managing projects and partnerships\, local government ecologists play a crucial role in shaping and delivering initiatives that safeguard and revive nature in our cities. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an illustrated talk by Peter\, who will share his perspective on protecting and restoring urban nature. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session\, providing an opportunity to engage in constructive discussions about nature conservation. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. Donations will support the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 24th October. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. Talks take place in Ouseburn Farm’s lovely\, warm event space. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, including access to the event space and toilets\, are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss other accessibility requirements\, please feel welcome to contact us and we’ll be very happy to help. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto: Peter Shield assisting in the ringing of Kittiwakes on Saltmeadows Tower\, Gateshead | Wild Intrigue\, 2024

This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back in the landscape\, thriving freshwater life – from wetland birds and fish\, to unexpected surprises like insects feeding on sugar-rich sap – offers different encounters on every safari. \n\n\n\nWhile the nocturnal beavers themselves are highly unlikely to be seen on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, the magic lies in seeing and understanding their incredible ecosystem engineering. Our Dusk Beaver Safaris will return in early Summer 2025 to watch the beavers and experience the tranquility of their wetland habitat – find out more here. \n\n\n\nOur Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington are among the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, as you witness the profound impact this keystone species has on the surrounding plants\, animals\, and even the behaviour of water itself. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, quickly adapting to changes in water flow\, food availability\, and family dynamics. This means each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, with flexible itineraries to accommodate the busy beavers and abundant other wildlife. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue had previously undertaken community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland. We are thrilled to now to share our expertise and insights from Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\nIn the summer of 2024\, Wild Intrigue hosted 50 immersive beaver experiences at the Wallington Beaver Enclosure. We’re excited to continue sharing the evolving landscape and seasonal changes of the Wallington beaver wetland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE\n\n\n\n– The beaver enclosure features rugged\, uneven terrain\, including some hilly areas that guests must navigate. The walking safari moves at a leisurely pace\, allowing guests to fully experience the diverse wetland environment. If you have any questions about accessibility within the enclosure\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. \n\n\n\n– The Beaver Enclosure is not located in the main NT Wallington visitor hub\, as detailed on the map. It is approximately a 10 minute drive north. The exact meeting point with directions will be shared upon booking. \n\n\n\n– Pre-booking is essential. Beaver Enclosure Safaris are only suitable for ages 16+. \n\n\n\n– Ticket holders can enjoy complimentary same-day access to the National Trust Wallington estate!

SUMMARY:Discover Fungi
DESCRIPTION:Hear all about the wonderful Kingdom of Fungi with Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN) Urban Naturalist\, Ellie Davison. \n\n\n\nFrom Puffballs to Jelly Ear and Turkeytail\, there have been a few fungi observations and records made in the Wild Ouseburn project area. We will take a slow walk through Ouseburn Woods with Ellie\, who will share insights into searching for mushrooms\, the hidden world of fungi beneath the ground\, and the seasonality of fungi. \n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to ask questions about these intriguing organisms\, whilst we explore ways to establish fungi survey methods. \n\n\n\nWe will meet outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm and head into the woods to discuss how different habitats\, species and management can influence the flourishing of fungi. \n\n\n\nEveryone welcome\, no need to book\, just turn up for a 1pm start! \n\n\n\nEllie’s role is funded by the Reece Foundation as part of The Ouse Burn Way vision\, which aims to support a seven-mile urban wildlife corridor from the River Tyne at Ouseburn to Weetslade Country Park.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | The Urban Flora of Newcastle with James Common
DESCRIPTION:Join brilliant botanist\, James Common\, for an exploration of Newcastle’s wonderful weeds\, elusive orchids and all in between. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\n\n\nJames Common is Senior Naturalist for the Naturalist History Society of Northumbrian (NHSN) and Vice-County Recorder of the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI). He is\, in his own words\, “slightly obsessed with the North East’s wild plants” so there is no better place to enjoy a botanical-bounty in November! \n\n\n\nNewcastle-upon-Tyne and neighbouring parts of urban Tyneside are home to over 1\,000 species of wild and naturalised plants. Amazingly\, this is roughly one quarter of all the plant species known in the UK. Here\, species associated with woodland\, meadows\, wetlands and other natural habitats mingle with those found exclusively in our urban spaces creating a flora that is both locally unique yet broadly similar to towns and cities nationwide. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, we’ll explore highlights of Newcastle’s urban flora\, taking a look at key urban habitats and the plants found there and take a closer look at some current trends in plant abundance across the city. We’ll also enjoy a whistle-stop tour of plant life in the Ouse Burn Valley – one of the most diverse sites in the city. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 21st November. SUMMARY:Wetland Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:Help protect birds on the burn!\n\n\n\nThe tidal nature of the River Tyne and the lower Ouse Burn make these blue corridors excellent natural resources for birds in the heart of the city. To protect and improve the lower Ouse Burn for birds and other wildlife\, we need to understand which species use the area – and how they use it. \n\n\n\nWild Ouseburn Wetland Bird Surveys follow two survey routes across the project area: \n\n\n\n1. From the mouth of the Ouse Burn (near the Cycle Hub) to the culvert underneath the Ouseburn Viaduct (near Ouseburn Farm).\n\n\n\n2. Along the north bank of the River Tyne\, from Spiller’s Wharf to the Millennium Bridge.\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT\n\nThis survey will follow Route 1 and will mainly focus on wetland birds\, from Mallards to Mute Swans\, alongside visual water quality checks on the Lower Ouse Burn. \n\n\n\nSurveys are monthly and are an opportunity to come together to: \n\n\n\n– Identify and count the species present\n\n– Learn about and record interesting behaviours observed\n\n– Identify important feeding and roosting areas\n\n– Help to build a comprehensive picture of the birds that use this important wildlife corridor\n\n– Meet others interested in local wildlife\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome! All levels of knowledge/ experience in birdwatching and surveying can take part. Our surveys are all about learning more about Ouseburn’s wildlife\, as well as conserving it. \n\n\n\nTaking part in Wetland Bird Surveys is a valuable way to help contribute to meaningful conservation in the Lower Ouseburn. \n\n\n\nTO JOIN IN\n\nSimply meet outside of the Cycle Hub\, Spiller’s Wharf for a 10am start. There’s no need to book\, and you’re welcome to come along to as many surveys as you like. \n\n\n\nEverything you need will be provided including Opticron binoculars\, identification guides and recording sheets. You just need to bring yourself. \n\n\n\nCan’t make the survey dates? Don’t worry\, drop us an email and we can arrange another date to introduce you to the survey! \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to find out more beforehand\, get in touch at wildouseburn@wildintrigue.co.uk \n\n\n\nABOUT WILD OUSEBURN SURVEYS\n\n\n\nThe Wild Ouseburn surveys\, which use established research methods\, provide insights into the seasonal patterns of local wildlife. The data gathered is helping to paint a more comprehensive picture of the area’s biodiversity\, informing efforts to conserve and enhance habitats and species\, and ultimately bolster the vibrant wildlife of Wild Ouseburn. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n2024 / 25 SURVEY DATES\n\nSunday 24th November \n\nSunday 15th December \n\nSunday 19th January \n\nSunday 23rd February \n\nEach survey starts at 10am outside The Cycle Hub\, and ends at around 11am.

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | An Evening with Sophie Yeo\, author of Nature's Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTICE: Unfortunately Sophie is unwell so this event is now cancelled. Please do come along to Ouseburn Farm for 6.30pm and we will instead dive into the fascinating world of Beavers: their ecology\, reintroduction and future\, hosted by Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue). \n\n\n\nWe’re very excited to welcome North East author\, Sophie Yeo\, for an evening discussion on her 2024 book\, Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back. \n\n\n\nPlenty of festive treats and nibbles will be available too! \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nSophie Yeo is a writer and journalist based in Durham. She is the author of Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back\, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Wainwright Prize for writing on conservation. \n\n\n\nSophie is also the founder and editor of Inkcap Journal\, a publication about conservation in Britain\, which won the Press Gazette Newsletter of the Year award in 2022. She has written about nature and climate change for publications including The Washington Post\, The Guardian and BBC Future.  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\nFor thousands of years\, humans have been the architects of the natural world. Our activities have permanently altered the environment – for good and for bad. \n\n\n\nIn Nature’s Ghosts\, award-winning journalist Sophie Yeo examines how the planet would have looked before humans scrubbed away its diversity: from landscapes carved out by megafauna to the primeval forests that emerged following the last Ice Age\, and from the eagle-haunted skies of the Dark Ages to the flower-decked farms of more recent centuries. \n\n\n\nUncovering the stories of the people who have helped to shape the landscape\, she seeks out their footprints even where it seems there are none to be found. And she explores the timeworn knowledge that can help to fix our broken relationship with the earth. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Sophie encounters the environmental detectives – archaeological\, cultural and ecological – reconstructing\, in stunning detail\, the landscapes we have lost. \n\n\n\nToday\, the natural world is more vulnerable than ever; the footprints of humanity heavier than they have ever been. But\, as this urgent book argues\, from the ghosts of the past\, we may learn how to build a more wild and ancient future. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nSTRUCTURE: \n\nSophie will join Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue) to discuss her journey as an environmental writer\, exploring topics such as researching her book\, her perspective on landscape-scale nature restoration and other intriguing pathways to be explored during the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe event will include an opportunity for the audience to engage in the discussion\, and will feature a Q&A session. \n\n\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too!
