DESCRIPTION:An after-dark exploration of Ouseburn Woods under a starlit canopy.\n\n\n\nDuring the February New Moon\, when the night-sky is at its darkest\, a celestial canopy of starlight shines its brightest. \n\n\n\nThanks to the rich darkness of the nearby Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, we can enjoy an essence of its beauty from areas in the city tucked away from the trespass of artificial light. \n\n\n\nTraditionally considered a time of renewal and growth – of longer days as we slowly emerge from the Winter – the February New Moon offers a great opportunity for grounding and inspiration. Perhaps we’ll ignore it’s connection to spring cleaning for now though… \n\n\n\nJoin Heather from Wild Ouseburn for a guided\, women’s walk through Ouseburn Woods and City Stadium\, in search of tranquil darkness\, to gaze upon the stars. For the past 7 years\, Heather has wandered through Ouseburn Woods at night to survey bats\, and will share intriguing insights into the wildlife which benefits from these wild\, dark spaces. \n\n\n\nThis free event is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in connection with the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival. \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET \n\nHeather will be waiting outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm for a 7pm start\, from there\, you’ll slowly head into Ouseburn Woods and up to City Stadium – perfect spots for stargazing. Binoculars will be available for use on the night\, which offer a great way to look deeper into the starscape. DESCRIPTION:Explore Ouseburn’s wild spaces after dark\n\n\n\nJoin a guided nocturnal safari of Ouseburn with Cain from Wild Ouseburn\, to explore how our urban landscape looks\, sounds and feels at night. \n\n\n\nPart of Wild Ouseburn‘s programme of events\, you’ll discover which nocturnal wildlife ventures into the Lower Ouseburn at night\, and how the burn’s tidal connection makes it an incredible hotspot for wildlife in the city. Based from Wild Intrigue’s comfortable Woodland Wildlife Hide in beautiful Naddle Forest\, you will spend a morning watching the antics of Red Squirrels whilst enjoying a locally sourced\, cold breakfast board. \n\n\n\nWith intimate views from the hide\, and the shared expertise of a Wild Intrigue guide\, you will discover the fascinating ecology of the Red Squirrel and its woodland home along with an array of birdlife. \n\n\n\nScampering Red Squirrels in treetops were once a common sight throughout the whole of the UK\, with historic population estimated at 3.5 million individuals. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE TALK\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome back wonderful Duncan Wise from Northumberland National Park\, for an enchanting and fascinating evening discovering our starscape. Duncan was instrumental in securing theNorthumberland International Dark Sky Park status in 2013\, and has continued to be a passionate advocate of its continued protection and exploration. \n\n\n\nIn his fascinating talk hosted at Ouseburn Farm\, Duncan will share his expert tips into how – even in the urban environment – we can better conserve our dark skies for wildlife\, and our own health and wellbeing. We will also delve into the various ways to enjoy stargazing; from specialist apps to discovering some of the best locations to become immersed in the star-dusted night-sky. \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, Duncan will also host a guided stargazing session in Ouseburn Woods\, with the use of Northumberland National Park’s specialist binoculars and telescopes. Fingers crossed for clear skies..! If you are unable to attend the stargazing session\, you’re very welcome to just come along to the talk.  \n\n\n\nWe first welcomed Duncan to Ouseburn in 2023 as part of the Wild Ouseburn Dark Skies programme of events\, which celebrated nocturnal wildlife and explored ways to protect urban dark skies for wildlife and people.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re delighted to feature Duncan’s talk as part of a small collection of Wild Ouseburn dark skies events\, as part of the newly launched North East Dark Skies Festival.   \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. DESCRIPTION:Explore Northumberland’s wild winter wonders\n\n\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue and the Northumberland National Park astronomy team to discover the wild wonders of winter beneath the blanket of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. \n\n\n\nNorthumberland is renowned and accredited for having the most pristine dark skies in England\, offering spectacular opportunities for stargazing\, particularly throughout autumn and winter. \n\n\n\nWith your feet firmly on the ground\, you will embark on an exploration of the Dark Sky Park in a fascinating\, expert-led stargazing workshop\, to explore the celestial blanket above with guided use of special telescopic equipment.  \n\n\n\nUnder Wild Intrigue’s guidance\, you will take a short\, starlit stroll through Walltown Country Park to discover the intriguing ways wildlife benefits from dark skies\, and how different local animals cope through the winter months. \n\n\n\nThroughout the evening you will be able to enjoy the warmth of Walltown’s cosy indoor room\, with hot chocolate and a wood-burner to keep you toasty. Here\, you will also discover how you can help to protect our dark skies and nocturnal wildlife\, in illustrated talks by Duncan Wise from the Northumberland National Park and Wild Intrigue. \n\n\n\nTICKETS £15 per person. \n\n\n\nThis event is most suitable for ages 11 and above\, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder.  Please note that dogs are not permitted on this event. This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back in the landscape\, thriving freshwater life – from wetland birds and fish\, to unexpected surprises like insects feeding on sugar-rich sap – offers different encounters on every safari. \n\n\n\nWhile the nocturnal beavers themselves are highly unlikely to be seen on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, the magic lies in seeing and understanding their incredible ecosystem engineering. This unique opportunity will immerse you in the fascinating ecology and intrigue of beavers in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. \n\n\n\nYou’ll witness and learn about a range of captivating beaver activities\, such as sculpture-like gnawed tree stumps\, masterfully dug channels and impressive dams. These complex\, ever-changing beaver features make this wetland one of the most exciting habitats to explore. With more water held back in the landscape\, thriving freshwater life – from wetland birds and fish\, to unexpected surprises like insects feeding on sugar-rich sap – offers different encounters on every safari. \n\n\n\nWhile the nocturnal beavers themselves are highly unlikely to be seen on Beaver Enclosure Safaris\, the magic lies in seeing and understanding their incredible ecosystem engineering. Our Dusk Beaver Safaris will return in early Summer 2026 to watch the beavers and experience the tranquility of their wetland habitat – find out more here. \n\n\n\nOur Beaver Enclosure Safaris at NT Wallington are among the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Wild Intrigue collection\, as you witness the profound impact this keystone species has on the surrounding plants\, animals\, and even the behaviour of water itself. \n\n\n\nBeavers continuously upgrade their wetland habitats\, quickly adapting to changes in water flow\, food availability\, and family dynamics. This means each Beaver Enclosure Safari will be truly unique\, with flexible itineraries to accommodate the busy beavers and abundant other wildlife. \n\n\n\nWild Intrigue have previously undertaken community engagement for a number of beaver restoration projects in northern England and Scotland. We are thrilled to now to share our expertise and insights from Britain and Europe in our home county of Northumberland\, in partnership with National Trust Wallington. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE\n\n\n\n– The beaver enclosure features rugged\, uneven terrain\, including some hilly areas that guests must navigate. The walking safari moves at a leisurely pace\, allowing guests to fully experience the diverse wetland environment. If you have any questions about accessibility within the enclosure\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. \n\n\n\n– The Beaver Enclosure is not located in the main NT Wallington visitor hub\, as detailed on the map. It is approximately a 10 minute drive north. Now\, due to the pressures of reduced food\, habitat availability and disease\, largely brought by the introduction of the North American Grey Squirrels\, the UK Red Squirrel population has dramatically declined to 120\,000 individuals\, with only around 15\,000 Reds remaining in England. \n\n\n\nBut there is hope! Scotland and Northern England remain strongholds for Red Squirrels\, with teams of dedicated conservationists working together to protect the scamping of Reds in our treetops for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\nThe work undertaken at RSPB Haweswater makes an outstanding contribution to Red Squirrel conservation in in the Lake District National Park. By protecting Naddle Forest\, a semi-ancient Atlantic oak woodland\, Reds have abundant foraging and nesting opportunities\, and by planting tens of thousands of fruit and nut bearing trees over the years\, this vital habitat will be expanded and protected to ensure the future survival of Reds Squirrels at Haweswater. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host this experience at RSPB Haweswater.
