SUMMARY:Ouseburn Bat Safari
DESCRIPTION:Discover Ouseburn’s nocturnal neighbours\n\nJoin Wild Intrigue on an urban wildlife safari to discover the intriguing nocturnal wildlife of Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s lush Ouseburn Valley. \n\n\n\nSetting off at sunset with bat detectors in hand\, Wild Intrigue will guide you on a journey to track bats down as they emerge from their roosts for ‘breakfast’. Bat detectors bring a whole new level to spying on these elusive mammals\, allowing you to eavesdrop on their ultrasound clicks\, slaps and pops as they hunt and communicate with each other. \n\n\n\nThese amazing mammals have cruised our skies for tens of millions of years – way before the first humans took their first steps. Join us to find out all about the bizarre anatomy and curious ecology of some of our longest-evolved mammals\, right here in the city. \n\n\n\n100% of Ouseburn Bat Safari ticket sales go directly into community rewilding project Wild Ouseburn\, to help better understand and protect bats in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of wild encounters to enjoy in northern England\, explore our full collection here.

SUMMARY:City Stadium Wildflower Meadow Seeding
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn to seed a new wildflower meadow at City Stadium!\n\n\n\nIn 2024 during a Wild Ouseburn Sunset Bat Survey\, Common Pipistrelle bats were recorded feeding over a section of grassland near Warwick Street\, which was part of Urban Green’s ‘Let it Grow’ campaign. This was the first time bats had been recorded feeding over this part of the City Stadium during surveys! \n\n\n\nWildflower meadows and grasslands rich in biodiversity are an incredibly important habitats\, but are increasingly rare in the Lower Ouseburn Valley. Their plants provide nectar for pollinators\, attracting insects for Sand Martins\, Swifts and bats\, and the long vegetation offers shelter for small mammals – and a hunting ground for Ouseburn’s Kestrels. \n\n\n\nYou can read a report on Ouseburn’s Butterflies by Mike Jeffries to explore how vital these habitats are here. \n\n\n\nWorking with Newcastle City Council and the Ouseburn Trust\, the Wild Ouseburn project has been given the opportunity to restore some of this grassland habitat\, to create new wildflower-rich meadows on part of the City Stadium for nature and people to enjoy. \n\n\n\nJoin us to seed this new wildflower meadow and be part of it’s colourful future! \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome! Just bring a water bottle\, a coat if it’s wet and shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy. \n\n\n\nSaturday 29th March | 1pm – 3pm \n\nMeet at the brightly coloured shipping container behind The Ship Inn for a 1pm start. \n\nwhat3words:https://w3w.co/ruby.petal.rushed \n\n\n\nThis wildflower meadow creation has been funded by Wild Intrigue\, and supported by Newcastle City Council\, Ouseburn Trust and Newcastle Nature Networks.

These amazing creatures come to life after sunset\, silently swooping through the night to play their crucial role in our ecosystem. Or that the bigger Noctule bats love to hang out in big old trees? \n\n\n\nAt our Bat Chat & Habitat event\, you’ll get to discover the wonderful world of bats with a lively\, illustrated talk by Wild Intrigue. You’ll learn all about British bat ecology\, their intriguing history\, and what we can do to help protect them. Then\, get hands-on with Nick James as you and your family do some wood work and work together to make your very own bat roost box! \n\n\n\nHere’s the best part: we’ll be using wood from one of the trees that recently fell in Gosforth Central Park\, right near the café. So\, you’ll be creating something for the park\, in the park\, with wood from the park. How cool is that!? \n\n\n\nAfterward\, we’ll head out on a Bat Safari to listen in on these mysterious creatures with acoustic detectors. It’s a fantastic way to experience the magic of bats right in your own community. \n\n\n\nThis event is perfect for families! Adults and children will work together to create one bat box per ticket purchased. Please note\, all children must bring an adult with them and be supervised by an adult at all times during the event. Suitable for children age 7 and up. SUMMARY:Bat and Hedgehog Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Our nocturnal wildlife is steeped in mystery – by coming out after dark\, the ecology and behaviours of sunset explorers including bats and hedgehogs can be unknown and misunderstood. However these creatures have fascinating nocturnal adaptations waiting to be discovered\, and are incredibly important indicators of the health of our urban environments. \n\n\n\nThe ways in which bats and hedgehogs move through and use the Wild Ouseburn project area are little-understood – and in such cases\, we can make changes without properly understanding the impact we’re having on these declining mammal populations. \n\n\n\nBoth rely upon darkness away from urban lighting\, habitat connectivity and food availability\, so to understand how we can protect and improve these natural features\, we need to first identify where bats and hedgehogs are currently active. \n\n\n\nOur Bat and Hedgehog Surveys will involve meeting at set points to survey bat activity acoustically (with bat detectors) and search for hedgehogs and their signs. All information will be recorded on a map\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nJoin us on our Bat and Hedgehog Surveys to help us discover where these animals are active\, and: \n\n\n\nLearn about Bat and Hedgehog ecology\n\nBe introduced to Bat survey methodology\n\nLearn how to use a Magenta 4 bat detector \n\nLearn different ways to survey Hedgehogs\n\n\n\nSurveys will take part in different locations within the Wild Ouseburn project area\, and at different times according to the sunset. Please look at Dates and Locations section for the meeting points and start times of each event.  \n\n\n\nYou are welcome to attend one or all surveys and\, if you are interested\, will have the opportunity to volunteer to take on areas to continue and expand these important surveys. Everyone is welcome\, no prior experience or knowledge of bats or hedgehogs is needed. Please note that most routes include steps. \n\n\n\nThis is the start of longer-term Wild Ouseburn surveys and studies on our urban bats and hedgehogs\, and more opportunities will be developed to contribute to surveying and protecting these mammals. \n\nSURVEY DATES & LOCATIONS\n\n\n\nWednesday 26th June | 21:30 – 22:45 \n\nOuseburn Woods (meet outside Ouseburn Farm entrance) \n\n\n\nFriday 5th July | 21:30 – 22:45 \n\nBallast Hill and St Lawrence (meet by bench at Ballast Hill) \n\n\n\nTuesday 9th July | CANCELLED due to weather \n\nShieldfield \n\n\n\nThursday 18th July | 21:20 -22:35 \n\nSt Ann’s and Lime Street (meet on Lime Street\, at bottom of Steps to Nowhere) \n\n\n\nFriday 2nd August | 21:00 – 22:15 \n\nOuseburn Woods (meet outside Ouseburn Farm entrance) \n\n\n\nThursday 8th August | 21:00 – 22:15 \n\nShieldfield (meet outside Big River Bakery) \n\n\n\nThursday 15th August | 20:30 – 21:45 \n\nBallast Hill and St Lawrence (meet by bench at Ballast Hill) \n\n\n\nTuesday 27th August | 20:00 – 21:15 \n\nSt Ann’s and Lime Street  (meet on Lime Street\, at bottom of Steps to Nowhere)
