You’ll discover their hidden stories\, from raising chicks to co-existing with humans\, and the impressive journeys they make to the coast each day for food. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, take a seat in the beautiful St Mary’s Heritage Centre to relax with an exclusive talk by local ornithologist Daniel Turner\, to hear fascinating insights into the ecology\, history and lives of the Tyne Kittiwakes. Dan has surveyed the colony for 30 years\, which is always reflected in the passion and knowledge which he shares through his talks and involvement with the Tyne Kittiwake Partnership. \n\n\n\nWe’re delighted to link up with Proven Goods Co. for these experiences\, who supply their irresistible\, small batch doughnuts to enjoy during Dan’s talk (dietary requirements can be shared upon booking). \n\n\n\nKeen to share our urban Kittiwake kingdom with your little ones (aged 10 and under)? Take a look at our Family Kittiwakes & Doughnuts experiences! \n\n\n\nThe Tyne Kittiwakes are an intriguing and recognised part of our urban natural heritage. As always\, all profits from Wild Intrigue’s 2025 Kittiwakes & Doughnuts experiences will contribute to supporting the Tyne Kittiwake colony.

SUMMARY:Bird Migration Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Ouseburn for an illustrated talk that brings to life the incredible journeys birds make to reach our corner of the world each year. \n\n\n\nFrom the tidal Ouseburn to the lofty heights of the Tyne Bridge\, discover how Sand Martins\, Kittiwakes\, Swifts\, and other migratory birds travel thousands of miles across continents — facing storms\, deserts\, and oceans — just to nest and raise their young in our urban landscapes. \n\n\n\nWe’ll dive into the science and stories behind migration:– How do birds know where to go?– Why do they come back to the same spots year after year?– And what can we do to help them survive and thrive? \n\n\n\nWith beautiful images\, maps\, and videos\, we’ll explore the challenges these birds face\, the wonders of their journeys\, and the surprising ways our city supports their life.

SUMMARY:Migration Safari
DESCRIPTION:Follow the Flights Paths of Our City Birds\n\nJoin Wild Ouseburn guides for a laid-back\, nature-filled walk to discover the incredible stories behind the birds that travel thousands of miles to spend their summer right here in Newcastle. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of our safari are the Sand Martins – small birds that journey all the way from Africa to raise their chicks in the sandstone walls of Ouseburn. You’ll get the chance to watch them swooping over the river\, hear their chattering calls\, and learn how this urban colony has made its home in the shadow of The Free Trade Inn. \n\n\n\nBut they’re not the only long-distance travellers in town! We’ll also introduce you to the city’s most famous seabird residents – the Tyne Kittiwakes – as well as other visiting species all part of the same incredible migration story. \n\n\n\nAs we walk through the along the Tyne and Ouseburn Valley\, we’ll explore the challenges these birds face on their journeys\, how they navigate across continents\, and what makes the city such a special place for them to return to year after year. \n\n\n\nMeet outside of The Cycle Hub

SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | Protecting and Restoring Nature: a local government ecologist’s perspective
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Peter Shield\, Senior Ecologist with Gateshead Council\, to hear his perspective of opportunities for nature restoration in the urban landscape. \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE TALK\n\nThe River Tyne physically divides the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead\, but in ecological terms\, it serves as a vital connection for urban wildlife navigating between the two.  \n\n\n\nOuseburn’s tidal waters and expansive green corridor intertwine the landscapes and ecosystems of these neighbouring cities. Kestrels\, for instance\, maintain territories across the urban divide\, hunting freely between grasslands. Butterflies flit between patches of nectar-rich wildflowers\, while otters swim between river catchments and pollen drifts between the cities. \n\n\n\nThough a “landscape-scale approach” to nature conservation is more commonly discussed in rural contexts\, this holistic perspective must also guide efforts to protect and restore our urban environments. \n\n\n\nTo kick off the third Wild Ouseburn Talks series\, we are delighted to welcome Peter Shield from Gateshead Council’s Natural Environment Team. From developing policies and plans\, managing projects and partnerships\, local government ecologists play a crucial role in shaping and delivering initiatives that safeguard and revive nature in our cities. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an illustrated talk by Peter\, who will share his perspective on protecting and restoring urban nature. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session\, providing an opportunity to engage in constructive discussions about nature conservation. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. Donations will support the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 24th October. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. Talks take place in Ouseburn Farm’s lovely\, warm event space. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, including access to the event space and toilets\, are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss other accessibility requirements\, please feel welcome to contact us and we’ll be very happy to help. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto: Peter Shield assisting in the ringing of Kittiwakes on Saltmeadows Tower\, Gateshead | Wild Intrigue\, 2024
