SUMMARY:Nocturnal Ouseburn | Women's New Moon Wander
DESCRIPTION:An after-dark exploration of Ouseburn Woods under a starlit canopy.\n\n\n\nDuring the February New Moon\, when the night-sky is at its darkest\, a celestial canopy of starlight shines its brightest. \n\n\n\nThanks to the rich darkness of the nearby Northumberland International Dark Sky Park\, we can enjoy an essence of its beauty from areas in the city tucked away from the trespass of artificial light. \n\n\n\nTraditionally considered a time of renewal and growth – of longer days as we slowly emerge from the Winter – the February New Moon offers a great opportunity for grounding and inspiration. Perhaps we’ll ignore it’s connection to spring cleaning for now though… \n\n\n\nJoin Heather from Wild Ouseburn for a guided\, women’s walk through Ouseburn Woods and City Stadium\, in search of tranquil darkness\, to gaze upon the stars. For the past 7 years\, Heather has wandered through Ouseburn Woods at night to survey bats\, and will share intriguing insights into the wildlife which benefits from these wild\, dark spaces. \n\n\n\nThis free event is part of Wild Ouseburn\, in connection with the 2026 North East Dark Skies Festival. \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET \n\nHeather will be waiting outside the front entrance of Ouseburn Farm for a 7pm start\, from there\, you’ll slowly head into Ouseburn Woods and up to City Stadium – perfect spots for stargazing. Binoculars will be available for use on the night\, which offer a great way to look deeper into the starscape. Fingers crossed for clear skies! \n\n\n\nBOOKING \n\nThis walk welcomes all who identify as women <3 \n\n\n\nThis walk is most suited for adult women (and ages 12+ with adult supervision)\, however if you have childcare requirements you are very welcome to bring your little stargazers along too! \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP for your free ticket(s)\, and keep a look out for emails and updates to this event listing\, as we may need to cancel or postpone in the event of wet weather. \n\n\n\nIf you are no longer able to attend\, please let us know so we can re-open your space. SUMMARY:Ouseburn Wild Talks | An Evening with Sophie Yeo\, author of Nature's Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTICE: Unfortunately Sophie is unwell so this event is now cancelled. Please do come along to Ouseburn Farm for 6.30pm and we will instead dive into the fascinating world of Beavers: their ecology\, reintroduction and future\, hosted by Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue). \n\n\n\nWe’re very excited to welcome North East author\, Sophie Yeo\, for an evening discussion on her 2024 book\, Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back. \n\n\n\nPlenty of festive treats and nibbles will be available too! \n\n\n\nPart of the Ouseburn Wild Talks series\, hosted in collaboration with Ouseburn Farm and the Ouseburn Trust\, as part of the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nSophie Yeo is a writer and journalist based in Durham. She is the author of Nature’s Ghosts: The World We Lost and How to Bring it Back\, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Wainwright Prize for writing on conservation. \n\n\n\nSophie is also the founder and editor of Inkcap Journal\, a publication about conservation in Britain\, which won the Press Gazette Newsletter of the Year award in 2022. She has written about nature and climate change for publications including The Washington Post\, The Guardian and BBC Future.  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\nFor thousands of years\, humans have been the architects of the natural world. Our activities have permanently altered the environment – for good and for bad. \n\n\n\nIn Nature’s Ghosts\, award-winning journalist Sophie Yeo examines how the planet would have looked before humans scrubbed away its diversity: from landscapes carved out by megafauna to the primeval forests that emerged following the last Ice Age\, and from the eagle-haunted skies of the Dark Ages to the flower-decked farms of more recent centuries. \n\n\n\nUncovering the stories of the people who have helped to shape the landscape\, she seeks out their footprints even where it seems there are none to be found. And she explores the timeworn knowledge that can help to fix our broken relationship with the earth. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Sophie encounters the environmental detectives – archaeological\, cultural and ecological – reconstructing\, in stunning detail\, the landscapes we have lost. \n\n\n\nToday\, the natural world is more vulnerable than ever; the footprints of humanity heavier than they have ever been. But\, as this urgent book argues\, from the ghosts of the past\, we may learn how to build a more wild and ancient future. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT & VENUE\n\nSTRUCTURE: \n\nSophie will join Heather Devey (Wild Intrigue) to discuss her journey as an environmental writer\, exploring topics such as researching her book\, her perspective on landscape-scale nature restoration and other intriguing pathways to be explored during the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe event will include an opportunity for the audience to engage in the discussion\, and will feature a Q&A session. \n\n\n\nTICKETS: \n\nWild Ouseburn Talks are a welcoming place for everyone to come and discover all things wild. Talks are free and open for all to attend\, complimentary hot drinks & biscuits too! Please RSVP your free place(s)\, you will be sent a reminder email a couple of days before the event. \n\n\n\nIn previous years we’ve had requests from attendees to make donations\, so this year there’ll be a contactless payment machine to make a donation if you want to. Donations will support the Wild Ouseburn project. \n\n\n\nDATE & TIME: \n\nThursday 12th December. 6.30pm start – arrive from 6.15pm to find a seat and make a hot drink and grab a mince pie! We’ll finish at around 8pm. \n\n\n\nLOCATION: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, Ouseburn Road\, Newcastle-upon-Tyne\, NE1 2PA. Talks take place in Ouseburn Farm’s lovely\, warm event space. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nOuseburn Farm\, including access to the event space and toilets\, are wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Noctalgia: Dark Skies Matter | Ouseburn exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Casting light on nocturnal wildlife\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome the enchantment of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park to Ouseburn\, with the spectacular exhibition\, Noctalgia: Dark Skies Matter\, created by Ouseburn-based artist Bethan Maddocks. \n\n\n\nThis beautiful series of sculptures play with light and cast mesmerising shadows around the exhibition space of the BottleWorks gallery space in Ouseburn. Featuring delicately cut imagery of shooting stars\, the Milky Way\, hunting owls\, night pollinating plants and insects\, the sculpture is a tribute to the visible stars\, creatures\, and plants that thrive under Northumberland’s pristine dark skies. \n\n\n\nAs visitors step into the darkened gallery\, the sculptures will cast intricate shadows of these paper-cut creations onto the walls\, creating an immersive and emotional artwork that is nothing short of theatrical. \n\n\n\nNoctalgia is a new term invented by astronomers to describe the pain associated with losing access to the night sky due to light pollution: “noctalgia\,” meaning “sky grief.” This particularly resonates with our diminishing access to dark skies in the city\, as electric light sources trespasses ever-more into our starscape. \n\n\n\nCommissioned by Northumberland National Park Authority and generously supported by the Sir James Knott Trust\, this innovative exhibition has been created by visual artist Bethan Maddocks\, in collaboration with community groups and visitors through creative activities and workshops. \n\n\n\nThe Noctalgia exhibition forms a key part of Ouseburn Dark Skies\, a long weekend celebrating our nocturnal wildlife and exploring ways to restore and protect our dark skies for wildlife and people. Discover the full Ouseburn Dark Skies programme here. \n\n\n\nWe are incredibly grateful to Bethan Maddocks and Northumberland National Park for partnering with Wild Intrigue to share this exhibition through Ouseburn Dark Skies\, to shed light on the interconnectedness between our natural world and the celestial wonders within the darkness above. \n\n\n\nWith thanks to Malings Community Fund for their support in Ouseburn Dark Skies. \n\nImage: Noctalgia artwork in The Sill | Kate Buckingham \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOCTALGIA LAUNCH EVENT with BETHAN MADDOCKS \n\n\n\nFRIDAY 24TH MARCH 6pm – 7.30pm \n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION OPENING HOURS\n\n\n\nFRIDAY 24TH MARCH \n\n10am – 5pm \n\n\n\nSATURDAY 23RD MARCH \n\n10am – 2pm \n\n5pm – 7pm \n\n\n\nSUNDAY 24TH MARCH \n\n10am – 7pm \n\n\n\nMONDAY 25TH MARCH \n\n10am – 5pm \n\n\n\nNo need to book\, just come by
