Colourful flashes of urban wildflowers creep out from wall crevices, between cracks in pavements and in the beautiful tangles of our green spaces.
Everything from the purple clouds of Ivy-leaved Toadflax pushing through walls, to Elderflowers pulsing their perfume along paths, to much-misunderstood Dandelions (of which there are many species) bursting through concrete to feed our pollinators.
Wild Ouseburn is the 4th most botanically diverse area in Newcastle, but there’s still more to discover. Join us to identify, map and document the flora of the Lower Ouseburn Valley. Plants are the cornerstone of any ecosystem and contribute greatly to the diversity of species. Gaining a better understanding of species present, and their abundance is key to protecting and rewilding the area for the future.
Heaton’s own Urban Botanist extraordinaire, James Common, Senior Naturalist at the Natural History Society of Northumbria will lead us in a number of botanical surveys across the season, recording every species we find.
No need to book, just meet outside of Saint Ann’s Church, Battlefield. No experience or understanding of plants is required.
