Summer nature experiences for families | North East

Schools out! Let the wild summer begin 🎉

Browse our collection of family wildlife experiences in Northumberland and Newcastle, running through July and August 2023. There’s something for everyone, from tots to teens, with each experience designed for adult family members to enjoy too 😉

NATIONAL TRUST WALLINGTON

With woodland, gardens and rivers to enjoy, Wallington is one of the most popular go-to spots for families in the North East. So we’re delighted to be back at this beautiful, nature-minded National Trust estate to host a collection of wildlife experiences this summer!

Young wildlife photographers in the making are invited to join an adventure of nature exploration and photography on Kids Wildlife Photography, while older teens keen to hone in on their expertise can take part in our Introduction to Wildlife Photography. Families with children aged 12 and above can join us for a peaceful morning discovering Wallington’s wild side on our Wallington Wildlife Safari.

Ticket holders are also entitled to complimentary same-day access into National Trust Wallington!

WALLTOWN COUNTRY PARK (GREENHEAD)

A bustling quarry until 45 years ago, this Northumberland National Park site is now full of beauty and wildlife thanks to rewilding and planting.

We’re back at Walltown to host our popular underwater exploration of the creatures and features of Walltowns ponds on Frogs & Flapjacks. Alongside this we’ll be hosting Nature Rangers, for kids to kick off their journey as naturalists on an intriguing nature discover experience.

We’re also bringing a NEW experience to Walltown, Kids Wildlife Photography, to introduce budding photographers to the fine art of capturing wild moments!

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE

There’s wildness awaiting discovery in the city, and we love nothing more than exploring urban wildlife amongst the stunning architecture of Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside.

On Ouseburn Bat Safaris we eavesdrop on these nocturnal mammals amongst the graffiti and greenery of this lush valley, the perfect urban adventure for families as well as adult groups. There’s something very special and memorable about hearing your first bats in the heart of the city, and is a great way to inspire young wild things about spectacular species being all around us.

Quayside Nature Tours is a leisurely exploration of the River Tyne, usually targeted at a more adult audience, but would be great for families with teenagers keen to learn more about local birds. We provide binoculars for the adventure, as well as a lush picnic from local social enterprise Big River Bakery.

Most suited for families with teenagers.

WILD NORTHUMBRIAN (TARSET)

With gorgeous, vibrant meadows and rich wooded edges, Wild Northumbrian has been one of our favourite host sites since our early Mini Exped days.

Our Family Bats & Pizza Nights need no introduction, as the first Wild Intrigue Mini Exped our al fresco pizza making, meadow exploring, marshmallow toasting, bat hunting experience sells like hot cakes each year! However, we recently snuck in a few additional dates which have availability remaining (at time of writing!) These are:

Saturday 19th August

Thursday 24th August

Friday 25th August

Tickets £5 – £25

Okay, you could say Moths & Muffins is our least tempting title. But our nocturnal pollinators fashion an astounding wardrobe of shapes, colours and iridescence – all hidden under the cloak of night. Trust us, with 2500 moth species compared with just under 60 butterflies, there’s plenty of intrigue to discover. Fresh coffee and orange, birdsong, tasty muffins and intriguing encounters with hidden wildlife on a beautiful Northumbrian site. What better way to start the day with your family?

Most suited to ages 7+.
