Migration Safari
15th June 2025 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

Follow the Flights Paths of Our City Birds
Join Wild Ouseburn guides for a laid-back, nature-filled walk to discover the incredible stories behind the birds that travel thousands of miles to spend their summer right here in Newcastle.
At the heart of our safari are the Sand Martins – small birds that journey all the way from Africa to raise their chicks in the sandstone walls of Ouseburn. You’ll get the chance to watch them swooping over the river, hear their chattering calls, and learn how this urban colony has made its home in the shadow of The Free Trade Inn.
But they’re not the only long-distance travellers in town! We’ll also introduce you to the city’s most famous seabird residents – the Tyne Kittiwakes – as well as other visiting species all part of the same incredible migration story.
As we walk through the along the Tyne and Ouseburn Valley, we’ll explore the challenges these birds face on their journeys, how they navigate across continents, and what makes the city such a special place for them to return to year after year.
