Sunset Parakeet Watch

March 9 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm

Join us for an informal evening to watch the Ring-Necked Parakeets (Psittacula krameria) heading to roost over Ballast Hills!

A species native to South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the origins of Ring-Necked Parakeets in the UK is one of rumour and myth, some say Jimi Hendrix released them in London in the 60s, others that they escaped from the set of The Africa Queen 1951!

Ringed-Necked Parakeets have now colonised many parts of Europe, and the UK (particularly in London). In Newcastle we have a small, but growing population, of about 300 birds, in the winter months they roost communally. You can find out more about them in Phil’s blog.

Ballast Hills is a perfect place to spot these noisy parrots heading to their winter roost in Walker Park. Join us to record them in the Wild Ouseburn, bring a chair if you have one, or a blanket to sit on the grass, and we’ll bring the binoculars!

No need to book, just meet at Ballast Hills for 530pm.
