There are wild creatures and wonderful places waiting to be explored, from the hidden lives of nocturnal wildlife, to beautiful wildflowers and beasties.

Here are some of our TOP wildlife experiences for families, made easy for you to browse through based on their locations:

NATIONAL TRUST WALLINGTON

Great for ages 7 – 12

Young photographers in the making are invited to join Wild Intrigue to explore National Trust Wallington’s wild side through the lens, looking closely for everyday moments in nature that makes our world enchanting. Perfect for those intrigued by photography, and camera-phones can be used!

Great for teens 14+

Explore Northumberland’s first beaver wetland to be restored in 400 years on a wild corner of the beautiful National Trust Wallington Estate. Join Beaver Believers Wild Intrigue for a guided tour of the enclosure, learning about the fascinating history, ecology and craftsmanship of this returned species.

Great for ages 7 +

Bringing a whole new light to the nocturnal side of Kielder Forest, our Bat Safaris are a great way to take a mini adventure together before bedtime! Eavesdropping on bats is always a memorable moment for kids – and grown ups… Kids discover the night life that surrounds us while we sleep, and that animals communicate in fascinating different ways.

Great for ages 6 – 12

Kids join our naturalist team to discover the birds, beasties, wildflowers and perhaps even a chance encounter with an Osprey at Tower Knowe. A lovely way to spend time on a slow exploration of the wild things that make Kielder so special. Kids are awarded certificates at the end!

Great for teens – younger birders enjoy these too!

Embark on a tailored cruise in search of Kielder’s enigmatic summer visitors, Ospreys. Kids and teens can discover the history, conservation and ecology of these magnificent birds of prey whilst observing their natural behaviours. Kids learn how resilient wildlife is if afforded space to live, and discover the amazing migration and hunting behaviours of Ospreys. A great way to show we can change our ways for a positive future.

WALLTOWN COUNTRY PARK

πŸ—Ί EXTEND YOUR ADVENTURE by exploring more along Hadrian’s Wall, and be sure to stop of at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre which has a whole host of activities as part of their Shaun the Sheep exhibition!

🚌 PUBLIC TRANSPORT AVAILABLE these experiences have been designed to fit with the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus timetable!

Great for ages 5+

Join us as we open the moth traps to Discover the kaleidoscope of colour that illuminates Northumberland by night, part of the Northumberland National Park Wild Wednesdays programme. Kids learn how tiny things can make a big positive impact, and how different plants support lots of wildlife – including our nocturnal pollinators.

A mini adventure for kids to immerse themselves in the wild side of Walltown, searching for things that crawl, bloom, fly and creep with Wild Intrigue. Kids are awarded a certificate at the end after finding out how to care for local nature.

Budding young photographers are invited on a fun journey to discover wildlife through the lens, and to learn techniques in capturing beautiful moments from everyday nature – even on camera-phones!

WILD NORTHUMBRIAN

πŸ—Ί EXTEND YOUR ADVENTURE by heading into Bellingham and visiting the spectacular Hareshaw Linn waterfall, or immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery of Kielder Forest and Water. These experiences coincide with our Bats & Pizza Night, so is a great add-on if you managed to get tickets for these too!

Great for ages 5+

Great for an easy, slow morning where you get to enjoy a fresh coffee while the kids are entranced by spectacular, vibrant moths. Opening the moth traps is like Christmas morning, we never know what we’re going to have caught the night before! Kids can help us safely release them back to the wild afterwards. A great way to show that small things can have a mighty impact.
